The Cutty Sark, a famous London landmark and thought to be the world's last surviving 19th century tea clipper, was severely damaged in a blaze on Monday.

The blaze was fought by 40 firefighters and brought under control only after causing extnesive damage to the ship. The fire is believed to be suspicious.

It is a sad day when someone decided to destroy such a valuable piece of history.

The initial examinations of the ship after the fire revelaed that  much of the historic part of the ship was saved from the blaze because of repair work that was going at the time.

The Cutty Sark Trust believes that the ship can be saved and has plans to completely restore her.

Damn, I was just by that this weekend, taking the boys for a walk in Greenwich Park and the maritime museum (with a lovely Harrier parked outside).

An no it wasn't me before you say anything!!

My grandmother lives in Greenwich and I have many a fond memory of that ship, damn shame.

I was just there last month and peered through the fence to see the gutted hull undergoing restoration.  If there had to be a fire on the ship it picked the best time: most of the ship simply wasn't there.  The only thing really still attached to the hull seemed to be some structural beams.  The rest of the ship had been completely dismantled and was off somewhere else.  I'll bet that they're able to put her back in to tip top shape without too much trouble.

We were hoping to take Mini-mod to see it once it had been restored (we were there the other year)... I guess that like the Twin Towers it's another that I'll never get a snap of my daughter standing on the way I did as a little one :'( :'( :'(

I still think its disgusting that this is front page news when you consider all of the real problems in the world. Its a shame, but it really doesn't matter!

If it does not really matter then maybe we should get rid if Duxford for example, just full of old bits of tin and some dusty history stuff ::)
