Sometime around 10:00 this morning, while working I heard a rumor that the Missouri river was going to be up near flood stage. About half an hour later I heard another person say that a mandatory evacuation order had been given for a neighboring town. After that someone told me that it was going to be "worse than than the flood of '93". The next thing I know, all hell breaks lose, people are crowding into the stores, buying canned food and water. Part of my job is stocking the DejaBlue botteled water, and I had some psycho buy ALL of the 24 packs that I had JUST put on the shelf. At another one of my stores, the entire water isle was sold out completely, and we were the first vendor company to be able to restock, so we got all of the best display spots, and pretty much all of the shelf area. In truth, yes the river is above flood stage, and the flood plains are containing it. The neighboring town had no evacuation order, but some people in low areas have been warned that they might need leave if it gets really bad. No one is in any danger, yet they all act like the sky is falling. Why? because some A-hole said to another idiot "hey the river looks like it might flood" which when passed along evolved into "THE EARTH IS ABOUT TO EXPLODE!!!11"

I just laugh when I think of all of those people who bought 50+ gallons of water, and don't need it at all.

About like here when the weather man predicted 12 inches of snow coming in.  Funny to watch everyone flock to the stores like its the end of the world....then wake up the next morning to a light dusting

Isn't it ironic that when people are panicking about flooding, that they go out & bulk buy.........................water  ;D

We are strange creatures, I forget where I read this but our compulsion is to shop when stress levels are high. Water, food, disaster supplies are like a pacifier for those who are scared by extreme weather events and not really a necessity during a pending disaster. The article also explained why everybody seemed to be out shopping on x-mas eve as a response to one of the highest stress days of the year.

Its almost like people who eat when stressed out or smoke.....

I wish I could find that article its been awhile since I read it.

But further up the Missouri, it did flood, and people sustained a lot of damage.

Floods are often sudden and unexpected things.

Maybe thoughts of the flood of 93 were in folks minds.  I remember that flood all too well.  It was an absolute mess.

Flood update:

I finally had the chance to watch the local news today and this is what I found.  Many small towns to the north of Saint Joseph (where I live) are experiencing flooding. Luckily no one has been hurt or killed, and the waters are receding. Rankin Airport in Marryville, where I used to (and will again soon) take flying lessons is about 40 miles north of here, and I was unable to reach them by phone. I am a little worried about my instructor and his airport, but I haven't heard anything about Maryville specifically. It's likely that the phones are down, but the town is still safe.

Such an alarm is reasonable, but I'm disappointed that people who live on that river have forgotten how to react.   :-/
