I think it would be far easier for them to organize a non profit corporation and buy him from his current cretakers, then do what they want to help him. I admire their concern for him, but trying to force the general public to accept a simian as a "person" is a dead end.

Why not? Mine enjoys a nice drink, pizza and a good fart as well! In fact my dog is more tolerant of my bad habits than my wife is and the dog doesn't mind war movies! Mind you if there is a dog or horse on telly she does go a bit bonkers (the dog not the wife)

This might be a bit extreme, but on the other hand, I'm all for animal rights... We all know there are species out there that have a high intelligence, yet humans call them beasts and use them as they please... Where do you draw the line? So many people say animals don't have emotions. Yet anyone who has a pet, knows a cat, dog, horse, pig, ... can be happy, afraid, sad, etc... So why do we keep treating them like objects? Perhaps we should give all animals more rights...

What everyone seems to forget in this type of discussion ..... humans are animals the only difference is our advanced communication skills and our ability to manipulate our environment.

Having said that ....... studies have shown that dolphins and chimps have the same advanced abilities if we weren't here one of them would be the dominant species.

Humans have got to realise that we are no different to any other animal on this planet and when it comes down to it Mother Nature will do the same to us as she did to the dinosaurs.
