just out of interest has anybody seen anything faster than this?

surely at that speed its going to be very hard to fly

Have you seen the R/C jets talk about fast. 8-)

Gas turbines are not necessarily any faster than props. They just look, sound & smell a lot more realistic. The Dutch KB-70 pulse jets are the fastest model aircraft I've seen at something like 270 mph. http://pulsejet.amtjets.com/gallery.html
Flying pulse jets is actually illegal in the UK but the Dutch team displayed at our local model air shows until a few years ago. Very noisy but rather boring to watch. No throttle so either flat out or off. Also a tad dangerous. IMHO

Doug, with your past interests in r/c, have any of your old mates from the field gone on to the hill to give a go at dynamic soaring ?....The speed of this type of flying may even exceed some of the newer turbines....I'm not sure on that though, but I have known for quite a while that they do move ......I found this LINK from 2002 about a speed posting from California........Videos here... 8-)

So,...for wealthysoup and the others who really haven't seen fast R/C, here is what you can do without that noisy, oily, spinning fan on the front and even without a fire blowing hot air out the back of a turbine, real high speed is attained with only the power of gravity and wind  :o......if you can build one strong enough to survive the "G" loading....... ;)

If I hadn't started flying serious gliders with the COGG in Ontario, back in the early 90's, I probably wouldn't have even heard of these guys ...........

Who needs an engine? People think gliders are an old man's hobby. ;)

I've not seen anything quite like that but I expect there's a few mad sods around here that have tried it. ::)

I have seen a R/C Eurofighter 2000 do a high speed pass at 250mph!, but on the second one it hit 275mph! :) and then the bottom of the wing ripped off and it plowed down the RWY in a fireball :(, but they walked away with it in about 25,000 burned up pieces :P

Eyes are getting tired from watching that plane go by at extremly high speeds.  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Anyone got the video of that RC Vulcan with 4 pulsejets in the wings?

That really didn't seem all that fast to me for a r/c jet....even if it is a turbine.  I've seen some ducted fans and plain prop r/c planes on a brushless motor setup go faster than that.  ;D

Of course it is faster than anything I presently fly at the moment...lol.  ;)

lol, this reminds me of when i was a kid, and wanted a dc-9 r/c, and a paved runway for it in our backyard. lol.

Sadly, it looks like it'll be a while before we can equip r/c jet engines with throttle control. :(  :P

I think you're confusing Gas Turbines with Pulse Jets.Model gas turbines can be controlled just like their full-sized counterparts.
Pulse jets like those in my previous links are a very simple form of internal combustion engine with no throttle. They work on exactly the same principle as the power unit on the V1 Doodlebug which was actually the first Cruise Misslile.

Oh, thanks for clearing that up. :)  :-* :D
