Very sad...

No matter what the reasons or even if the best of the best testify she has recovered mentally, there is no way she will ever fly again. She will be lucky if she is not drummed out of the Navy and the only thing that will prevent that is if it can be proven she had a complete mental lapse and not responsible for her actions and undergoes sucessful professional recovery. The fact she tried to hide the evidence proves she knew what she was doing so she just kissed her entire career in flight goodbye. She may be able to retain a ground position but I just do not see how the Navy would not court martial.

The fact she had private emails not addressed to her suggests she may have been involved in hacking and if it is found she used restricted systems to do it (and I know she had access to such systems in her position) .. whoaaaaaaah nelie! They will roast her, especially because it has become public knowledge.

People who have not been in a military career have no clue. PMS, mentalpause or any other mental/physical lapse wont fly as a defense in that case. If she had not brought any weapons (including the mace) she might have had a chance to skip the Navy court martial but I seriously doubt she would fly for NASA ever again simply because of the public humilation of their psycho system for checking mental/emotional stability.

Her rank and postion with the charges (even if they drop kidnapping) dictate she's Navy beans as soon as she fired that mace. They just need to figure out how to cook her now.

I'm not quite sure how NASA or the Navy could ever justify letting her fly again, or even letting her get near a multi-million dollar killing machine.  It's a ridiculous occurrence, and it just totally left me dumbfounded when I read it. :-?

This is the military. Any who never been there have no clues of what is going on.
Are you in, noone says anything. Are you out, anyone says everything. And can you cook on a "mistake" been done by someone, who even risks his/her life, then you are more in, than normal in.

First thing I thought of when I heard this was:

"looks like we'll be seeing a made for TV movie about this in a couple months."

Sadly I'm sure it's not only her career that's over.  Whoever approved her security clearance is probably also done for, and if the are psych evals for becoming an astronaut then whoever was responsible there is done for too.  If this had remained out of the public spotlight then the fallout would have been smaller, but now every two bit journalist and politician is going to smell blood in the water and it won't be over until innocent people lose their jobs.

Then there's the repercussions for NASA and space flight in general... the average person is becoming more and more anti-space (and anti-science), and this will just be another nail in the coffin. "Those crazy astronauts..."

If she were an actress or pop singer, or even a CEO or polititican, she'd be embarking on an exciting new career as Somebody Who Had a Big, Dramatic ,Very Public Meltdown (That Involved Sex and Jealousy), But Is Feeling Much Better Now (these people are worshipped like gods in the USA)... but because she's an astronaut and a Navy pilot, she's screwed, and NASA and the military will both suffer for it.  >:(

I read a news story recently about what people my age in the US value, and on the list were things like family, friends, religion, health, etc..., and guess what was at the top of the list of things people valued the most?  Fame.  It's more important to them than their friends, family, health, and other things.  The leaders of tomorrow, the politicians, CEOs, government officials, community leaders, and other powerful people see being famous as the most important thing in their lives.  That is just absolutely frightening.  Look at the people they are looking up to, celebrities who have little or no education about how the world works outside of Hollywood, people who are in the public eye because of how rich they are and how hard they party, or people who don't understand how normal people live, and they are the source of the views and opinions of young people.  I doubt our Astronaut friend here, Mrs. Lisa Marie Nowak, will be getting her own show on VH1, or an E! True Hollywood story, no, the media is just going to roast NASA and the military over a stupid incident caused, seemingly, by just one crazy person.
