I had this procedure done, and it was relatively painless. i remember it all vividly as the patient must be awake for the procedure. I was about 20/50 or so and within a week of the surgery i was 20/15... i have tested to 20/15 since the surgery in January of 1999.

BUT

for those of you who have had it or may be considering it, check out the surgery from the doctors  point of view!

I warn you - this made my wife almost puke - she said it was like something out of the movie "Hostel"

That eye sure gets red after the scalpel pass... looks angry!

despite what it looks like it is relatively painless. there is more "pain" in going to the dentist for a routine cleaning in my opinion.

what is not shown is the pill type sedatives they give you and the numbing eye dropps they give you.

the entire procedure for that one eye took about 3 minutes 12 seconds... 30 seconds of which the laser was active (clicking sound). the second eye, one would assume, would take about another 3:12 seconds.

after a couple more minutes of rest, an eye exam would follow where you just look at the chart and read the smallest letters you can. results are immediate to some degree... your vision does improved but not much. the doctor applies eye patches and sends you home with medication and eye drops to be applied a couple of times a day. eye patches come off about 24 - 48 hours later (if memory serves)

follow up appointments about once per week for perhaps a month and a half. by then you are seeing with clarity beyond what glasses and contacts were ever able to provide.

I would do it again if i had to. the convenience of never having to go get new glasses or contact lenses - never having to wonder where i left my glasses - never having to take my glasses or contacts out to go swimming - never worrying about my glasses breaking - never getting that red itchy eye because i slept in my contacts it is all worth that 6 and a half minutes of "cutting".

That was actually incredibly amazing.  I thought it would get a little squirrelly there, but after the first ten seconds, it was really amazing to see the procedure, not that the first ten seconds are gross or whatever, there's just the usual reaction of "....GROSS!!.............coooooooooool....".

I always find it amazing how doctors seem to "man-handle" people during surgery.  You'd think they would be doing more damage than good by pushing on the eye and cutting it and everything, but apparently it doesn't really do anything.  

I still wouldn't want to be a surgeon though.

Wait a minute, as I could saw, the morphology of the lens, is being corrected by a laser? after remove the cornea, passing thru the iris is this is correct? ,I though they did have to remove the lens to the outside reshape it (like a contact glass) then is insert it back,... That's why everyone whom I know ,claims is absolutely not painful at all ,and fast,...Man ,Im -1,25 espherical X -1,75 astigmatism and almost the same in both eyes ,,..I'M BLIND  8-)

heck i was blind as a bat... i think the laser passes thru the pupil and shapes the back of the eye inside the actual eye. all i know is for something that simple it works like a charm.

all i can say is make sure you pick a good experienced doctor. remember, you get what you pay for!

the person on the video only needed about 32 seconds of the laser i think mine was about 50 seconds. all the patient has to do is lay there and look straight ahead at a dim little light about this big ------> O

Looking at that Video fills me with dread...!!

Just poking a fly out of my eye with the corner of a handkerchief after a quick blast on my Motorbike is painful enough for me... ...!

...I'll stick to my trusty spectacles, I think... 8-)...!

I hate the thought of anyone fiddlin' about with my eyes....in case it all goes pear-shaped... ...!

Sticking to contacts for now.
I'm not that blind (-1,5/-1,5) and this procedure costs a bit too much.

Furthermore, I had a quite painful surgery on my nose in December, so going through similar stuff again would be a tad too much for me.

I think I win the blindness prize: -4.75 in my right eye, -5.75 in my left eye, the Air Force limit for pilots is at -5.5 right now, but navigators can have up to -8.0 correction, and both require less than -3.0 Astigmatism.

Also, if you want to fly for the military (in the US at least), having LASIK is an automatic disqualification.  Although, you can get PRK and still be qualified.

Tsk.. that's nothing compared to me..

I had this done a little over a year ago...free of charge thanks to my Uncle Sam...and I've got to say it was one of the best things I've ever done.  The whole thing took 15 minutes, the longest part was waiting in the waiting room...lol.  ;D

Didn't hurt right away but after a day or so I was hurting pretty good.  Was sick of putting drops in my eyes for three months afterwards too but now I can see things I never thought existed!  There are leafs on trees, did anyone know that?  ;D

Threw my glasses away and ever looked back....

What if you, by accident of course, move your eye during the laser treatment? :-?
