Root Canal?

Postby Isak922 » Fri Jan 12, 2007 4:31 pm

Well, I just got back from my first visit to the dentist in 12 years (Long story short: Was 5, Really traumatizing experience involving a dentist, Got him shutdown for said experience). Seems one of my teeth which I had a filling done in all those years ago, Now needs a root canal.

Anyone have one recently? We've all heard how bad they can be... Should I be worried? It's one of the larger teeth towards the middle, bottom left side of the jaw (The referral for the Root Canal says Tooth #19). Any tips on how to "lessen" the pain from the procedure? I'm really nervous about this in case you can't tell  ;D Any words of wisdom from anyone who's been through this will be very welcome.

It's not really that painful...

Rather similar to having your nuts crushed between a couple of bricks... 8-)...!

Nothing to worry about, just close your eyes, curl your toes up, and pray it will all be over in a couple of seconds...
...(which it never does)...

Good luck... :)...!

There's a Dentist around here that advertises "sedation dentistry" on the radio.  Basically you go night-night, and wake up after the procedure is over.  He does this for just about any dental procedure, I'm sure root canal would be on the list.  Call around and find someone who'll knock you out and go with them.  I've never had a root canal.  Maybe it's absolutely painless and Fozzer's just pullin your leg.  Even if that's the case you're obviously worried and it makes no sense to be worried when you can just sleep through the whole thing.

NAH...!

Ever heard the bloke outside your house drilling a hole on the road with his pneumatic drill at 6:30 in the morning... :o....?

That's what it's like having a deep hole drilled into your tooth with a Black and Decker drill, and then filled up with concrete... ;)...!

The pain is unbearable, and a quick death is much to be preferred...;)...!

I had a root canal years ago, upper front.  I was nervous beforehand, but it really wasn't that bad, of course, a front tooth is easier to get to than others.  Also 2 crowns, well, the worse part of that was sitting there for 2 1/2 hours in utter boredom.  No pain, use novacaine.  Worrying about it all beforehand?  Try not to, just makes things worse.   I'm having filling replacement now, after a few visits you kinda get used to it all.  It's the aftermath of the visit that's a problem, until the numbness from the novacaine wears off.  I think the purpose of a root canal is to save the tooth, by the way.  You'll be fine.

There is nothing to them, all the scare talk is just that talk.
Like the above poster said the worst part is the length of time it takes. I have had 3 done and neither has caused me anything more than the discomfort of sitting in the chair.
They place a rubber "dam" around the tooth being worked on that is the discomfort becasue you have to hold our mouth open the whole time with no break.

Just grab the dentist by his nuts and say "We are not going to hurt each other ARE WE?" Works every time,  ;)

As the son of a denstist, I can safely say it shouldn't hurt that much! Provided you'll feel the sting of the syringe when he/she applies the local anesthetics... However, I must also provide the information that I never had a rootcanal done, just the extraction of 4 wisdom-teeth, but under complete sedation...

After being in bed the last two and a half days for the flu, thanks to the flu shot, I got up in time to read your posts. This is just what I needed to brighten my day.... ;D

I hate needles, and dental work even more. When I had my wisdom teeth removed, I was sedated, but I still woke up in the middle of the procedure to hear sounds similar to 'crunching' noises, and the doctor tugging on my mouth. I was drugged, so my thoughts were "Whatever...", and went back to sleep.

I'm not looking forward to visiting the dentist again when I get back home... :-[

Hmm, that's a hard one, but I have to say that driving around waiting to get shot at or blown up at any minute is much more exciting that someone sticking their hand down your mouth with a drill ;D
