Man who lost trousers dialled 999
Emergency call handlers were left "in disbelief" when a man dialled 999 because he could not find his trousers.

The man was one of four people who inappropriately rang for an ambulance in the early hours of Saturday, during a busy night for the emergency service.

Another caller rang from Birmingham's Broad Street to say a 32-year-old "couldn't walk from too much dancing".

West Midlands Ambulance bosses said people should consider whether it was appropriate to call 999.

A third caller, this time from the Low Hill area of Wolverhampton, stated another 32-year-old had a finger injury.

The man was "extremely drunk" and it transpired the injury had been sustained two days earlier, said the ambulance service.

And the final call was from an 18-year-old man who had a toothache.

An ambulance service spokesman said: "At one of the busiest times of year it would have been helpful if these people had first thought about whether dialling 999 was appropriate.

"In the last of these cases medical help was required but not from the ambulance service."

I think thats a mis-print. Broad street would suggest either too much DRINKING, or fighting. not dancing. ;)

Same thing happens over here with 9-1-1. Those people should be billed for clogging up the line, preventing people in real need from getting through.  >:( Then they should be sterilized.

I think the line is clogged up here. I hear an ambulance go by every couple hours or so.

Vernetta Geric won't soon forget the 911 call she received about the squirrel in the tree.
An operator at the Allegheny County 911 Command Center, trained to handle critical emergencies, she sometimes answers calls that border on the absurd.

It's a growing problem across the state and the nation, as more people call 911 for non-emergencies, viewing the dispatching centers as a one-stop source of information.

The caller said she needed a police officer right away.

"What's the problem?" said Geric, 46, of East Pittsburgh.

"I have a large tree in my backyard ... there's a squirrel stuck in the tree."

"Ma'am, this is a squirrel? In a tree? What's the problem?"

"It's been there for about an hour. It's crying; it needs help. There's a problem," the caller insisted.

"Ma'am, sorry, but this isn't necessarily a police issue. It's a wild animal, sitting in a tree. It's supposed to be doing that. The squirrel will be OK. It'll climb down when it's ready," Geric said.

"Are you telling me you're not sending me an officer?"

"Sorry ma'am, this isn't a police issue. An officer wouldn't be able to do anything. The squirrel will be just fine, really."

"But police officers help people in need right?"

"Yes, ma'am. Squirrels are not people."

"Well, never mind, anyway. You've spent so much time explaining why an officer won't help me, the squirrel left. Thanks."

People who do things like this should be locked-up for a short stint for wasting police time. They'd soon learn not to do it again [smiley=evil.gif]

Because there is no emergengy phone like 911 or 999 so we do not worried ,one we get shot from a gunfire, hit by a car,or having a heart attack, we wait untuil a good samaritan appears and call our relatives ,can take hours days ,or month: also we can walk to the nearest hospital if we  don't bleedout to death  ;D

Haven't people heard of the non-emergency police phone number? You should find it right in your phone book.  ;)

Why 112 for ambulance and 110 for police in Europe?
Why 911 in the States?

However in the UK when the emergency system was introduced, it was found that telephones of the day could when faulty dial a "1" by themselves, thus being primed with a 1 or double 1 leaving the user to make their call with the potential to make an emergency call by adding one more number. 999 was right at the end of the dial and requires the user to remember one number and not two or more (remember there are people out there who would have to look in the phone book for  said number........."there is a squirrel in my tree" types). Also it was found that it would be easier to install the system that lets you make a fee call on a single number pattern than for example 911 or 112.

So again, why 911

For exactly the same reason as 999 in the UK ...... you can also use 112 in the UK from a mobile (cell) phone.

That is due to the international production and use of mobiles. You cannot dial 112 from a fixed line. Also if you need the police in Europe, you have to dial 110. Dialing 112 only gets you Fire service, and experience tells me, they will not connect you through, but tell you to redial.
