Amazing. ::)

Stupid yes, but I've always wondered what a human would look like in one of those things...

It seems stupid now but when I was a boy they used to have X-ray machines in the posh shoe shops. We had lots of fun trying on new shoes & looking at our feet under the scanner. Then someone caught on & they were suddenly banned. :'(

I don't think we suffered any permanent harm. My feet didn't glow in the dark the last time I looked. :D

A stupid traveler or someone looking for a free medical exam?  Hmmm, my hospital charges about $2k for an X-ray.  A plane ticket is only $300...

:)

A friend of mine was returining from a honeymoon.  His wife had purchased a large candle in a spherical glass container.  When it went through the X-ray it looked like one of those cartoon bombs like you'd see Bugs Bunny use: big round ball with a string coming out of the top.  Immediately security was all over the place, they were removed from line and their baggage searched.  Everyone relaxed when they realized the bomb was just a candle.

The scary part is this:  apparently airport security doesn't have a clue what a real bomb looks like.  The round candle style things haven't been used for a good 150 years or so, and even then they were cannon balls made of iron and would look quite different on an Xray than a candle.

Probably because as far as home made bombs go there isn't an international standard.

Maybe not but any old cannon ball bombs still out there are probably in museums.  Have there been any terrorist bombings involving 18th century artillery pieces?  My guess is that a real terrorist bomb would look like a pile of wires, come circuit boards, and some masses of low density stuff.  Security doesn't get all in a tizzy over regular cylinder type candles, only the ones that look like cartoon bombs apparently.  I'd bet if you stamped ACME on the side of your luggage they'd rip it apart looking for Wille-E-Coyote style rocket skates.

Well you can't take any chances. If a childhood of Tom and Jerry and Roadrunner has put a ball with a fuse as your mental image of a bomb you're going to open up that suitcase and have a look arn't you.

Bombs come in lots of shapes and sizes.  The wax from the candle under an x-ray looks just like plastique explosive.  Plastique can be put in any shape container, so when they saw that positive return on the x-ray, they opened it up.  Has nothing to do with old cannon balls or wyly coyote.
