Ay, I was looking at that earlier. There was the battle of jutland there as well as several vessels getting sunk anyway. Not surprising really if eventually they find the right one that belonged to the commander.

Jutland was closer to Denmark than Orkney. Hence why it's the Battle of Jutland.

Still, it's not totally suprising. It's more of a suprise that they're WWI subs. People tend to forget they were operating in those days.

Why should it be surprising? Weren't small submarines being used during the American Civil War, and even as early as the Revolutionary War? I'm talking very small, big enough for one to only a few people...

Interesting little snippet of history there. I wonder when Dr. Robert Ballard will be filming them ;D And worse yet when Hollywood will make some truly naff and totally inaccurate film about them ::) ;D

Yes. But I believe I'm right in saying that the American Civil War sub dissapeared without trace. I don't think there were any in the revolutionary war. Though there was an attempt that involved a barrel with a cork in it and two hand driven propellers. Can't remember whether that was revolutionary or civil war though.

I think the earliest Submarine was supposed to have been built in the time of James I and it was powered by oar. :o

They did locate the Civil War CSS Hunley and they retrieved it.  The Revolutionary War submarine was  Robert Bushnel's Turtle.  The Hunley carried out a successful attack, the Turtle didn't.
