I read this in my newspaper this morning but couldn't find an english article...

Apperently a german roadworker encounterd a british 500 punder when doing some digging at one of the autobahns. He encountered the bomb and the damn thing exploded killing him instantly. Since the bomb was dropped there, millions of cars must have driven over it. Really strange! The poor man was very unlucky. 5 others were injured.

So anyone found an english article?

You've only got to look at the Iron Harvest in France to see the amount of ordnance still being discovered - & thats from the First World War :o

That's a bummer. I've seen nothing in the papers here (why does that not surprise me?) but I did read this only yesterday. http://www.bbc.co.uk/hampshire/content/articles/2006/09/26/daedalus_feature.shtml

HMS Daedalus Evacuation

An evacuation thought to be the largest of its kind in peace-time Britain is under way to allow bombs to be removed from a former Royal Navy airfield. Roads will be closed each Monday during the operaton at HMS Daedalus in Lee-on-the-Solent.

Military experts are removing 20 World War II pipe bombs are still buried at the site of the former HMS Daedalus Royal Navy airbase in Lee-on-the-Solent.

Up to 3,000 people have been asked to stay away from their homes every Monday between 0930 - 1600 BST.  The work is scheduled to finish on October 23rd.

During the clearance by the Army, the evacuation of residents and businesses will take within an exclusion zone of up to 750 metres from the airfield every Monday. Roads in the area are being closed and 900 homes will be affected.

They did a similar thing at Shoreham when the hard runway was built in the 1980s. Also found an unexploded German bomb that had been below the airfield since WWII. Goodness knows how many of these things are still around.

Considering the millions and millions of tons of bombs and shells dropped and fired during the two world wars we'll be digging them up for a long time yet.

Can't remember which one but I saw a programme on the TV about WW1 ordnance being found in France. It's such a common occurance for farmers there that they now just lay the shells on their boundary walls by the road and the local bomb disposal unit comes round on a regular basis to cart them off.

That's really sad. :( How tragic. I thought the title was some pun and I certainly didn't expect someone to have died.
A couple of months back in Inverness a fisherman somehow hooked up a grenade. I saw the army bomb folks out on the scene.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/hig ... 227310.stm

The weird thing is no bombs (I don't think) or any ordinance fell on Inverness. A few old souls tell me a few German planes flew over and that was it.

Its worse...in Algeria hundreds of acres of arable land have been made useless thanks to the large number of mines the Germans sowed there....

Great stuff! ::)

Here in Germany there is a dedicated army bomb disposal team that study the post bomb run pictures taken after raids. They can tell from these pictures whether the entire stick exploded or if a dud was among them. They find a couple a week, go out and dig them up. Last week I went to a flight museum in Hanover. It was hard to get to because the police where in the act of evacuating a local house estate because two UXBs had been found. Residents had to spend the weekend with relatives/hotels/friends. It happens so often here, that it no longer makes the national papers, just the local ones, except when this sort of thing happens.
Earlier in the year I built a double garage at the front of my house. Before I got planning permission, I had to have a UXB survey done before I could start digging :o

Actualy, there should still be a hughe mine somewhere in france, i believe it was the messina offensive from WWI, the british dug a whole underground system below the german trenches, they placed 21 mines in there, 19 exploded and killed 10.000 or 100.000(not sure) in the first moments, one of the mines exploded later and one has never been found.

Then you still have a few mustard gass shels in front of the see, not quite sure were somewhere in belgium though.

And around the forest of the battlefield you can still find shoes, shells and a lot more.

Egypt and Libya are still the mine field capitols of the world due to the three years of fighting that took place there.
