Am I wrong here?

To me, this seems arrogant and ungrateful, but I'll let you all decide...

The wifey and I decided to give away some of the clothes, furniture, and toys the kids had outgrown to a certain well known charity, who offered to come and pick the stuff up for free.  We made an appointment for it to be picked up an then we set the stuff out back on the porch to wait for the guy.

The guy showed up, and I took him around back to get the things and the guy started going through the boxes deciding what they wanted and what they didn't.  I point blank informed the guy that he just need to take the stuff (none of it was junk) and they could sort it out later.  His reply was there were certain things they were willing to take and things they wouldn't.  At that I got hot and told him if he didn't want it fine, I didn't have to give it away, but he didn't really seem to care.

I understand they must get crap sometimes, and the volume of stuff they have to throw out must be enormous, but it just seems arrogant...

I would probably have felt exactly the same. To be fair to the charity I was reading about the problems they have disposing of the rubbish that people dump on them. Some people aren't as careful as you obviously are & use it as a convenient way of dumping their junk. The charities collected it for nothing then ended up paying for the disposal of tons of this stuff. It's people like this you should really be blaming for it.

In the UK charities aren't allowed to sell 2nd hand electrical goods due to the safety aspect. Could be you have certain restrictive laws in the US as well and they don't want to get in trouble/sued....

My grandmother works at a thriftstore, and I've helped sort out some of the stuff they get it. I've seen trash bags filled with regular garbage, to random crap that nobody would ever want. One guy donated a truckload of stuff that I helped sort out. I found calendars from the '70s in one box ::)

Most of the stuff ended up being hauled to the dump anyway.... :-/

We were once in a charity shop and a person had given some stuff in. When the lady started sorting through it it was full of soiled nappies/clothes. Absolutely disgusting. Some people really stink. :-/

I do know what you mean Kevin - it is a personal insult to you and I think perhaps the guy just was being too careful and forgot about your feelings. He wouldn't like it done to him I'm sure. I think it is arrogance - but probably he never meant it.

See what happens when you try to be charitable?
;D ;)

It's true, though... imagine what they must find in those Goodwill clothing drop-off bins, for example. If you dare... :D
It's another classic example of how the jerks have spoiled just about everything... including generosity.  ::)

I'm lucky: there's a Salvation Army retail shop practically across the street, so if I want to donate a few items it's no big deal to walk it over there.
But of course I'm usually buying, not donating... ;D

For bulk or large items, in my neighborhood all you need to do is leave it on the curb or the loading dock (or in your car) for 5 minutes or more and it will be gone... either street people, crackheads or scrap mongers... and occasionally a neighbor in my building.

There are lamps, tables, chairs, futon frames, books and TVs that have been moving from floor to floor over the years, thanks to this "system"... :D
