This sounds a bit dodgy.

If the pilot had returned to LAX, British Airways would been stuck for around $200,000.

The airline has vociferously denied that the decision to press on with only 3/4 of its available engines had anything to do with financial considerations. However, BA policy has since been clarified that the plane must land if it experiences an engine failure, even if those engines remaining are running just fine.

Only a short time ago the captain's word was always law while an aircraft was airborne. The safety of the aircraft, passengers & fellow crew members came first and cost or inconvenience didn't come into it. This is how it should be. It all stems from our litigation society & the stupid EU legislation which if allowed to continue could easily bankrupt airlines within a very short time. (Those that aren't already bankrupt of course.)

Onur Air...........after watching them do an engine change outside our hanger a month or so ago, I have to say they are the last airline I will ever fly with.

Y'know, it's kinda funny...
Just a week after this incident, the SAME plane flew from Singapore to London and had an oil pressure problem, with the SAME engine :-/ (Although it had been replaced) (Might've already been discussed)

Not that I'd want to try it if I were a pilot, but apparently the 747-400 can fly on 2 engines!

After circling the Pacific for a few minutes while the captain contacted BA's control center, the crew decided to continue the 11-hour, 5,000 mile flight to Heathrow on three engines, rather than turn back and face a minimum five hour delay

There was no danger in that call...

...and the Captain did everyone a favor by still doing that flight...

...saves precious fuel, the enviroment (kerosene and nature don't mix well...), the airline money, and everyone's time...

I never had a delayed or cancelled flight. But when other people experienced them, it was mayhem when the passengers got pissed.

I did:

I was kicked (well, not literally) out of the baggage hold of A USAF C-130 to allow 4 emergency leaves to get home. Since they couldn't find a schedualed military flight to get me back enroute to my duty station, I was sent out of Honolulu via a commercial flight.
Nope, no screaming by me.

When I went on leave out of Gulfport, MS (I was then stationed at Biloxi), I had reserved my flight more than a month in advance. I arrived at the terminal with my ticket and found that my reserved flight out no longer existed. I had to take a different flight, changing to another in Atlanta, GA; finally, I was put on a shuttle flight (paid by the initiating airline), landing in a snowstorm at a runway a fair amount smaller (howbeit, a little closer) than originally planned. My luggage took a different route but arrived in time for me to take it right back to Mississippi with me.
I did no screaming but not the happiest in all episodes.

Basically, as long as they make it safely to their destination, the passengers are pleased. If they don't, though...

I would rather be delayed or cancelled than have my life risked by a dimwit pilot or airline company trying to spare a dime
And those passengers who can't understand something like that are the ones that belong to families that will be the first in line at the lawsuit hearing trying to get money for your death.
So yes in a situation like that I would much rather be delayed or wait for another flight, I like to take risks but I am not a idiot. Unfortantly too many others are.

And too think that terrorism is the main thing people fear most when flying
