Well, this morning began the holy month of Ramadan...if you don't know, during Ramadan all followers of Islam fast from 5:00am in the morning to around 6-7PM in the evening...I never have lunch at school anyway, so no hunger pangs from me...LOL...At least I have Internet to keep me occupied... :) ;)

Thanks Ashar... you too.  ;)

Basically Omar because the Islamic calendar is based on the moon (i.e. it is a Lunar one) and the western calendar is based on the Sun, the times on which different things occur (such as Ramadan or Eid) is on different days every year on the western calendar (going backwards) but is on the same day in the Islamic calendar.  :)

Same thing with most jewish holidays too.  Rosh Hashannah is today, but last year I think it was later in the year.  Chanuka is also always different, sometimes its around Christmas but two years ago it started in November

It's only "different" from the Gregorian calendar that most folks follow... which also is based on lunar cycles, but with all sorts of adjustments thrown in.
On other calendars, the significant days always fall on the same day every year, just as they do with the Gregorian calendar.
Uh, except for Thanksgiving... and Easter... and Memorial Day... and Labor Day... ;D

...Or am I wrong? ;D

Anyway...a tranquil Ramadan to all Muslims out there; Salaam Malakim.

Rotty is right, the holidays fall on the exact same day every year on the calendar they belong to.  Tu Bishvat always is on, um, Tu bishvat (the 15th of Shevat),  Rosh Hashannah is always on the first day of the year, etc...

Difference is that the islamic calendar originally didnt need seasonal adjustments (like the georgian calendar).
If mr Bede and Caesar hadn't take action, Christmas would have been in mid summer.

To make it even more complicated... it differs between countries too.

There are three systems (and variations on them too)
[*]precalculated start and end dates
[*]moon sightings in the country itself
[*]moon sightings in Mecca
Precalculated start date and ending on Mecca moon is a quite common one.

Turkey uses calculated dates, and sometimes is a day ahead at the start.
