On this day here in the US we are honoring our war veterans. I'd like to offer my thanks to all those that have sacrificed so much for our freedoms.

I vividly remember the day I had an epiphany about this; I was just a kid, and prone to associate our flag with negative things... I was drumming in my HS marching band during the local Memorial Day parade, and afterwards I stood for a moment and looked at Old Glory atop the pole in the town center, thinking about the faces of the uniformed vets I'd seen in the parade and on the sidelines. It suddenly dawned on me what any nation's flag is meant to represent, and what it means to a soldier in the field, wherever it flies. I still don't care if someone wants to burn or tread on a flag, or if someone wears one on their head or whatever, but if anyone had tried to mess with that flag in its place of homor, they'd have had to get past me to do it.
War is terrible, but courage and sacrifice are beautiful things. I'm happy to say that I think of fallen war heroes more than once a year... :)

"There was never a good war or a bad peace."
Benjamin Franklin

"I prefer the most unfair peace to the most righteous war."
-- Cicero.

"War is cruelty and you cannot refine it."
Gen. William T. Sherman 1820-1891

"Never think that war, no matter how necessary, nor how justified, is not a crime"
Ernest Hemingway

"There is no way to peace. Peace is the way."
-- A.J. Muste.

"War makes good history but peace is poor reading."

Thomas Hardy

"I would say that I'm a nonviolent soldier. In place of weapons of violence, you have to use your mind, your heart, your sense of humor, every faculty available to you...because no one has the right to take the life of another human being."
Joan Baez

Hope these qoutes will make you think a little about things.. about the world.. about.. war..

I visited the history forum first and gave my Memorial entry there; here, I'll address those serving, and who will serve, in their nation's military:

May you never have to face the horrors of actual war
Or the shock of a bullet ripping through flesh and bone;
May you never have to fight to the end, to the very last
For, even yet standing, the last man remaining is left alone.

Being a vet myself, and having a decessed grandparent the was in WWII, I am also happy to know it stared here in the Fingerlakes, or at least officaily.

The official birthplace of Memorial Day is Waterloo, New York. The village was credited with being the birthplace because it observed the day on May 5, 1866, and each year thereafter, and because it is likely that the friendship of General John Murray, a distinguished citizen of Waterloo, and General John A. Logan, who led the call for the day to be observed each year and helped spread the event nationwide, was a key factor in its growth.
