Well in my intelligent design POV,

The chicken.

The egg would need something to keep it warm.

This question is only unaswerable because it's vague.  If you consider an undeveloped emyonic thing a chicken, then the chicken comes first.

Embryo>Egg>Chick>Chicken

There's no mystery here.  I hate this question. ::) :P ;)

Haven't we already done this?

edit: from a scientific point of view, the egg would've had to come first.

Wrong! The rooster would have had to come first or the chicken wouldn't be laying there. ::)

I reckon the egg came first as dinosaurs laid eggs and chickens weren't invented then... ;)

Danish Television has tested this, and the chicken won!

They took a egg and a frozen chicken, put them into a helicopter, and then dropped it from 150ft! (50M)

See the experiment here!

I love danish television!! ;D ;D

Cheers Theis

Erm, doesn't that answer the question "which would hit the ground first if dropped out of a helicopter 150ft above the ground on Danish television which Theis loves, the egg or the chicken?", and not "which came first?"

Perplexing question indeed.

But what always got me was that at one time someone somewhere sat and watched this thing come out of a chickens rear and said "Hmmm, I bet that would be good to eat."

- If chickens evolved from birds, which already laid eggs (perhaps reptilian birds), then the egg came first.

- If however, the chicken evolved so that it could lay eggs, then the chicken came first.

- If God created everything, then the chicken came first!

I believe that the first is true, but them birds that it evolved from wouldn't have laid eggs in the first place, or at least, wouldn't have been born from an egg. Since when can an egg just materialise from nothing?

The egg came first.

That last, significant mutation along the evolutionary path, that made whatever was prior to a chicken, into a chicken, can't happen AFTER something is "born" (or laid (or hatched)).. So the genetic make-up of the modern chicken was first, an egg.
