The Bible?

Before I ask, keep in mind this thread is not about morals or anything of the like; this is not a religious discussion.

I have been considering reading (probably skimming, they both look pretty big) the Bible and Quran, but there seem to be so many versions.  Is there an original version of the Bible?  Of course the truly original is written in Hebrew (I think), but unless I knew Hebrew all this time, that's not happening.  What would be most reccomendable?

I guess the safe choice would be KJV (King James Version)

Actually the original new testement would be in many languages. Mostly Greek and Coptic. Coptic is actually ancient Egyptian written with greek characters, but I don't suppose it matters as I doubt you could read it either. ;)

It is not a literary work that I am famillier with, so I couldn't give any advice.

The New International Version (NIV) would be a good choice. Widely used today. Not sure about the Quran, as I am Presbyterian. :)

I wouldn't recommend the King James! I'd try asking a Catholic Priest (seeing as how Catholicism is the original Christian faith).
You might also want to try the Torah, very similar to the Old Testament ;)

Yup, just one version of the Qu'ran exists.  ;)

As for the Bible, I didn't know there were different versions. I've read the one called 'Good News Bible', however, and it was quite a good read!

I believe that the Old Testament was written in Greek.  :)

The KJV was the standard English version for most protestants since the 17th century and is still used often. However, since the majority of protestants contested the 'apocraphal' books (those not in the Hebrew canon), they were first moved to the end of the Old Testament, then eliminated by the 20th century. Additionally, you're dealing with 17th century Middle English and some words are now obsolete or have actually changed meaning. For instance, Middle English used the word damsel (actually stolen from Old French) to properly translate the direct old Hebrew equivelent, na'arah; modern translations use the less defining word, girl.
As Tacit indicates, the New Testament was a collection of letters/documents written in old Greek (had to edit: I would have made Fozzer happy -- I left the "r" out  ;D ): the life and times of Christ and his followers. The version of the Old Testament in Greek (written a few centuries before Christ) was the Septuagint (supposedly written in 70 days; septuaginta is Latin for 70).
The more common Modern English Catholic version in the U.S. is probably the New American Standard Bible which contains the additional Catholic books (Apocraphal per protestants). My basic theological studies were Catholic based but I used the New Jerusalem Bible for my reference. The basic Catholic version is the Latin Vulgate and, if I'd gone Catholic all the way, I would have had to learn Latin, the language of the Romans, but that would also have taken several more years and I was afraid if I Romed to far I'd get lost. :P
More recently, I've usually been using my Thompson Chain New International Version (NIV). However, my arsenal -- ah, bookshelf -- contains:
King James Version
New Jerusalem Bible
Good News Bible
American Standard
I also have the New Testament Parallel Bible (KJV, Living Bible [a paraphrased version], Revised Standard Version [1800s but there's a newer, late 1900s version], New English Bible, Phillips Modern English and New Jerusalem). Then I have a Parallel Greek and English New Testament. If you're serious about knowing what was translated from what and can't find a Hebrew-speaking rabbi, a Strong's Exhaustive Concordance will also be useful.
It also seems that the Koran (Quran) is being confused with Qumran, the place where the (possibly Essene) Dead Sea Scrolls were found. However, the Koran is the bible of the Moslems, the followers of the prophet Muhammed; something quite well different.
P.S. Ozzy, a few million of the Orthodox may be taking potshots at your Spitfire for that errant, "seeing as how Catholicism is the original Christian faith," statement.

According to wikipedia there are 10 versions that differ in small details, mostly regional preferences in how to write some personal and geographic names.
Translations are NOT considered official but Turkey prefers a translated version (government control on the religious studies). There is a big chance that in China they have to use a translated version, and maybe in Russia before 1991.
If you want to read it, get an annotated academic translation.

i like the NIV  the Quran i dont know, barely can spell it.  and now that i think i believe the quran is the first 5 books of the bible so really its the bible just the first 5 books

That isn't true... but dont' forget that if you want to go deep you'll have to read the other texts (the ones that make the difference between Sunnites, Shiites, Alevites and Sufis) to really find out what is going on. Just the Quoran alone won't get you past basic items.

For the Bible... If i say 'Official bible' i mean the official catholic church one
Old Testament: originally in Hebrew, but the greek translation of it has been used as the source for the official bible.
New Testament: originals in Coptic, some parts in latin. For the Coptic parts the Greek translation has been used.

Just go out and get any bible .......... they all tell the same stories with  differences in the wording

Not exactly true. Parts have been omitted in later versions, and there are some recent scientific editions that have the 'horns' issue resolved.

[*]For the best translation, get one that is based on the latest translation projects. If possible go for a fully annotated one, like the Anchor Bible project (huge, 80 volumes of text and with loads of background resarch)
[*]For the best read, get one that includes the full 'apocrypha'. These can be hard to find though, but a King James text from before the 1826 review seems the most complete. These are available in the UK, but have the original 1600s spelling intact.
[*]For the most original Old Testament translation, get an official Torah in your preferred language, these are based on the hebrew text, and don't have the translation and copying mistakes that are in the Old Testament version that is in the Bible.

Forgot to mention: the 1st five books of the Bible are called the Pentateuch (Greek = Pentateuchos), the original Torah, as assembled quite a few centuries B.C.

Regardless of your source do not attempt to read the Bible without a decent study guide.  It is not in chronological order and it will make very little sense after the first couple of books.
