So whats the point of a Forum then?

Just a weird thought passing my few cells, just what is the true point of a forum?

Ok, we all discuss issues etc but, for what?

I'm not talking of the Simviation forums, more forums / message boards in general.

Who are we actually talking to? Do forums ever generate something of a reaction outside the circle of forum members?

I suppose I'm asking, why do we post then? My girlfriend asked me this the other day, and its had me thinking ever since.

Surely, I could be doing something else? ???  :o  ;D

Thoughts appreciated.  :)

its just a way of expressing views to others in the world we would never meet otherwise. Shure we could be doing something elce but we can share ideas, comments, and even learn here or other forums. I have sometimes used items disscused in here for my own conversations in person.

Ive learned alot through this forum over the past months which has enhanced my flight sim experience, so I see it as a good learning rescorce centre and a good place to see what other people have to offer. Also it's interesting to see other peoples lives an where they live and what they have experienced and also what they get from flight simulator as a whole :).

I have been asked this question from my house mate and he dosent seem to understand what I get out of Flight Simulator and these forums but If he was into Aviation then he would probally see what all of us do.

Mostly to finally talk to people of even roughly-common interests.  'Twas here I found I could read/talk about aircraft, World War II, PCs etc.  Most of my real world friends have no interests beyond beer, girls etc.  Though I have yet to encounter anywhere where I could discuss music.

Exactly. Most of my friends' views seem to circle around porn nowadays. I gotta get new friends. ;D

Useful sources of information, are forums, especially for people that are isolated and don't want to spend hours trawling different internet sites for information that may be dodgy or out of date.

My wife is a member of a forum for parents of autistic children. She's found it really useful for getting and giving information from/to people in the same position.

There are also some autistic members on the forum.. that gives everyone who deals with autistics an insight into how the autistic  mind works.

It's a place where you indulge yourself permenantly into a website, read news and views from around the world, look at pictures, laugh at jokes, and provide information you woudn't gain otherwise.

thats been said already, now here's the SimV term:

the point of this forum is to glue yourself to a wall with 20,000 other people in Pete's basement. we all get daily marmalade injections and talk about anything, from lastest world news, to someone in the Air force (of your represented country) to someone learned how to pick their nose. oh yeah cant forget the "I have #### Posts!!"

something like that.

Forum debate and chatter definitely spills over into "real world" conversations- I often quote or mention you- uh- esteemed gentlemen: trivia, street-level views on affairs in other countries, jokes, etc.
Don't visit many other forums, but the same applies. It's really not an isolated world, these web forums...
