OK, I don't know how many of you have heard about this but this is National Coin Week.

So, who cares...right?  I didn't even know that and I'm a coin collector.  Anyway, some guy in NYC has a lot of money and has decided to place 3 valuable coins into circulation.  He hopes (being National Coin Week remember) to spark an interest in the great hobby of coin collecting by publicly placing these coins into circulation.  

The 3 coins are all pennys"
1908-S Indian Head Cent
1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent (the KEY coin in the set-and the only one I'm missing)
1914-D Lincoln Cent.

I figure the Indian Head Cent (which is worth about $300 in its condition according to the reports) will probably be found first because they look so different.  For those of you who have never seen one, here's what one looks like (this is a 1907 from my collection, the one in circulation is a 1908-S).

The other two might take more time because they will look like any wheat back Lincoln Cent (which were produced from 1909-1958 and are sometimes still seen in change).  Just keep an eye out for really old one's, if it has a 1909 with an S below it or a 1914 with a D below it, don't spend it!!!

Also, for those of you who don't know what a "VDB" cent is (its a common term to coin collectors)-they have initials on the back of the coin.  The designer's initials were placed on the bottom rim of the coin and removed due to complaints midway through 1909 (creating 2 1909 varieties, one with VDB and the other without).  Both 1909-S cents are rare, but the VDB cent is the key.

According to the news, the 1909-S VDB cent he is placing into circulation is worth about $1000 due to its condition.

How much do you want to bet that the first person who gets it either keeps it, or sells it as a collector's item?

Wouldn't you?  What am I going to do with a 100 year old penny?

I collect coins that are different.  I've got two Chilean coins, a Chinese coin some Canadian coins, a gold dollar and a whole bunch of state quarters.  If I knew any of them were worth a hoot I'd sell them in an instant.

I missed this part of your post before-what kind of gold dollar is it?  That might be worth something, especially if it is an original "ment for circulation" coin.  I have an 1854 US Gold Dollar that is worth about $300 and its not considered rare for an old gold coin (its one of the more common ones).

I doubt it.  It's just the dollar they made a couple years ago.  It has the Indian lady on one side and an eagle on the other.  I doubt it's even real gold.

"Our" (UK) small coins have a tendency to disappear into bottles and boxes etc as they arent worth enough to use.........maybe the same will happen here and the odds of them ever being seen again must be astronomical.........commoner

That is possible.  I found a 1918 penny in change the other day.  But, I think this guy is flooding the news in NYC with this stuff so I'm sure people are looking for them.  But, it is possible that they will never be seen again.

so far all I have is an 1880s silver dollar, worth about $6 mint, but of course it's not mint.

They are worth more than $6 mint, an 1880-S Morgan Dollar is worth about $20 mint.  In fact, I believe thart they have about $7 or so in silver in them alone (at least, they did at one time-silver has been going up lately).
