And now I shall shut up.

For a serviceman, yeah. Otherwise...

Now I really will shutup, I swear.

Just because you are a serviceman it doesn't surrender your right to exercise your own moral judgement in any situation - in fact in these times it is essential that the judgement of the situation is correct - there are a lot of people who will quite happily prosecute you for any lapse. Having not been to Iraq I am in no position to judge his decision, but I don't think he is alone in his thoughts.

As for him having balls, I don't think it's that hard for a "junior rank" to either terminate his service, or if neccessary buy himself out of the army.

I agree you do not surrender your right to think morally-but you do surrender your right to act on that morality. (I don't mean things like indiscriminately kill civilians, I mean cases like this)

As a civilian, you have every right to disagree with a war and refuse to fight in it-I have no problem with draft dodgers.  But the second you sign your name on that dotted line and don the cammo, you do, as my mentor said, (Major in the marine corps, one tour in Iraq) "what the **** you're told to when the **** you're told to do it," regardless of if you agree with it.  And I agree with him.

Now, of course, where this gets sketchy is do you just go and kill a bunch of civilians because your CO told you too.
