BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Two young men have been arrested and a third person is being sought in the string of church arsons that destroyed or damaged nine rural churches in Alabama last month, a federal law enforcement official said Wednesday.

The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the formal announcement is to be made later, said the two are being charged with conspiracy and individual counts in the arsons at five Bibb County churches and four in west Alabama.

All nine churches are Baptist and mostly located in isolated areas. The five in Bibb County, south of Birmingham, burned early Feb. 3. The four in west Alabama were found ablaze early Feb. 7.

A 10th rural Baptist church in Lamar County has been ruled arson but is not believed to be connected to the others. It was discovered on Feb. 11.

The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives made the Alabama church arson case its top priority as scores of agents joined state and local law officers in the probe. The FBI had said earlier it was looking for two men, based partly on witness accounts.

what the heck! :o didn't hear about it as a joke or that they caught the third guy. Those bums are really messed up if they think its just a joke. Tell that to the people involved in the 9 churches. For some reason this reminds me of the antichrist...

It might not apply in this case but you obviously don't know much about the history of your country.

Yeah, church burnings are nothing new, at least not in America.  They've been used as a tool for terror and intimidation, especially in the south, mainly in the last 150 years but before that as well.

Not a part of history I'm proud of, and one the south still deals with. I don't know how many of you know about the klan but they are active where i grew up, around Hico, Texas. I know they will do this, the question is though, what drives people to do this. I don't understand racism, and I grew up with racists, heck im a white southern male from a small texas town and I never understood this. My family is racist also, you can bet they love me marring a Mexican, I just don't get it. Can someone explain the why?

I can't explain it but it's really no different from people burning down mosques & synagogues. It stems from a fear of the unknown which is a deep natural trait of the human race. I couldn't help noticing that this latest episode involved students at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, known throughout the world for the racial problems in the 1960s. http://faculty.smu.edu/dsimon/Change-Civ%20Rts.html

It seems more than coincidence but I have no idea if this latest crop of atrocities bears any relationship to these events.

PS.
September 15, 1963
Birmingham Bombing

On Sunday morning, September 15, 1963, a bomb exploded in the 16th Street Baptist church in Birmingham, Alabama. The explosion killed four young girls who were in the church for Sunday school and injured another 20 people.

The FBI sent agents to investigate and four suspects were identified. The Birmingham office of the FBI recommended that the four be prosecuted. However, the Director of the FBI, J. Edgar Hoover, refused and claimed that civil rights activists themselves bombed the church to gain public sympathy. The FBI initially closed the case in 1968.

The suspects were four members of the Ku Klux Klan. It took nearly 40 years for them to be brought to justice. Local prosecutors reopened the case and one suspect, Robert "Dynamite Bob" Chambliss, was convicted of murder in 1977. Herman Cash died in 1994 as charges against him were being prepared. On May 1, 2001, a Birmingham jury convicted Thomas Blanton (62 years old at the time of the trial) on four counts of murder.  Finally, on May 22, 2002, a jury convicted Bobby Frank Cherry (now 71 years old) of the murders. Both Blanton and Cherry were sentenced to life in prison.
