I know it's becomming a hype, though i haven't used it yet. To me, it seems very nice to use, if you and your partner are both computer-lovers. I mean, you both have to be "online" to be able to communicate. A bit like msn-chatting. I've also read it would be possible to call regular phone numbers, but guess what... that's payware! So don't put your hopes up on opening a permanent free line to Katie Paul... unless she like 'puters too... ;D

I suppose if you are both using Broadband, and therefore a permanent connection to the 'Net, maybe a "telephone ring", or similar, sounds on your computer to indicate that someone is trying to contact you via Skype...?
It was being discussed on BBC Radio this morning...

Well, I've seen these phone-like plug-in devices you can use for skype, instead of a headset. So it should be possible... but then you'll have to change to a broadband-connection Paul! Will we ever see that day?

I wasn't paying much attention but I heard or read something on this subject yesterday. Apparently all the major phone suppliers like BT will soon be providing this service free of charge. Not sure if this applies just to mobiles or ordinary land line connection. From what they were saying they will need to do this in order to continue making huge profits from their other services.
I'll have a google round to see what I can find out about it.

Here i Belgium, telecom operator Belgacom allready launched such a free service from 17h till 07h in the morning and during weekends. Only when talking to other landlines however.
I'm afraid the landline as we know it is disappearing rapidly. The new technology is far more interesting, especially with all the cable-networks beeing constructed!

I Use Teamspeak - as far as I can see there is no real difference to Skype - you both have to download free software, you both have to be online & they are both free.
Cheers,

I use Skype quite often, usually when I'm doing something where switching between the program I'm using and MSN Messenger becomes a bother.
Though I really don't like how they promote it as free phone calls. There's plenty of programs that allow 'voice-to-voice' chat already. And even so, the point of a telephone is so you can contact someone at all, or most times. With Skype, if you want to talk to someone, they have to be online, and have the program open.
Nice program, but far from being a telephone service... yet, anyway!

I find it convenient, and my use of Skype is limited. The reception is fantastic, clearer than a regular landline.
I would not, however, rely 100% on it for telphone communications.
I guess it reflects my own telephone system beginnings, but I like the idea (in principle, at least, although I recognize that many signals are now via microwave/satellites) of a "solid" piece of wire connecting me and the person I'm talking to...
