Probation? That's so dumb. Why don't I get arrested for taking Oregano into my cooking class then?

What I would think the proper protocol in that situation would be to, once confirmed that the substence was powdered sugar (take him to the police station by all means), just let him off clean, especially if it was for a science project.  If he meant for it to be a look-alike, that would be a different story.

All because a kid wanted to be creative for a science project. It wouldn't surprise me his creativety was ruined for a while

He should be encouraged. Not many folks are that interested in science at 12. ::)

I agree they have taken it a bit far, but if some kids going round skool flashing his coke, real or not, its not really gonna have a positive effect on the other pupils is it, think they need to do something to show its now acceptable.

Sorry, but somehow I don't buy the "project" line from a 12 year old. More probable that he brought in the powdered sugar to look like a bad ass in front of his classmates. Apparently suspension or expulsion from school was already on the books as punishment for it.

Having said that, he's a KID, a wise ass kid who did something stupid to impress friends and got caught. I think we've all got one like this or worse in our closet. A couple of days suspension would suit the offense fine and it should end there. Taking him to jail is total over kill.

So, I'm middle of the road on this one. The kid screwed up, but he's not a criminal.

This is just like the zero tolerance policies schools have towards firearms. If, as stated in the article, this was for a science project, he should go free with an apology from the school.

A kid can get kick out of school (suspended) for just drawing something that resembles a firearm.

Zero tolerance equal zero common sense.
