Why is everyone such a tenderfoot when it comes to critisizing screen shots?  I admit, I keep my impulse comments to a minimum, but why?

Am I just that Cynical?

Maybe it's because more than once, someone has said "be brutally honest", then got all huffy when someone was brutally honest. ;D

I have something good to say about almost all of these contest entries, but there's only so may ways to say "nice screenshot", etc.
And a thoughtful, constructive criticism is usually met with "yeah, I know, blah blah..." so... (shrugs).

I always try to say what I like and dislike about a shot.  I like most of the shots on SimV but even the best can be better.  What I don't like is been nasty to noobs posting their first shot, we all make mistakes at first (one of my images was over 100k for example in my second screen shot post).  I usualy suggest for them to turn on some AA get rid of the menu bar and get downloading.  I also don't like posts which are constant streams of emotion smileys, ok you rearly like the pic, so do alot of people but what makes it a good pic? can it be made better? just saying "it rocks!!!!11" dosen't make the creator of the screen shot go back and make another even better it just makes them dispair that no one is been honest.

Perhaps saying "it rocks" it won't encourage the creator to improve his screenshots, but it will almost certainly make him feel good, and from what I've seen, this is one of the best forums on the net in that regard.

And I would disagree that saying "it rocks" means you're being dishonest, if someone went to the trouble of clicking on the Reply button and saying that the shot is great, it means they probably liked it.  Nobody is forcing them to reply.

I agree. If they don't want me to be honest, don't say that. But if you want my criticisim, I will give it to your, usually constructive.

However if said n00b becomes hurt by my comments, don't go crying to mommy.

I often want to give criticism with screenshots, but half the time, most of the replies are "Wow, great shot!" or "I love it!", and I just feel that I'm the person spoiling it, by giving it a negative (well, criticism is positive..but...) comment. :P

There's a few at the moment, which may look visually stunning, but the composition of the screenshots isn't all that great. Though it is the judges who decide, so maybe they have the same opinions as me. I dunno.

And sorry for sounding miserable :) <- happy face

If someone gives constructive criticism (not just 'those are rubbish, or something like that) then I'm fine with it be it on my screenshots or my photos since it's criticism that helps you improve next time :)

Why is this in the contest section?

This keeps happening. This is for contest entry pics only and there's enough demand on window space already. This should be in General Discussion or the Cafe.

Weellll..... you guys really take the biscuit.

You all want screenie contests and you'd all love to win the prizes.

But instead of making it easy for the hardworking guys who go to the trouble of laying these things on on your behalf you fill what is supposed to be the screen shot contest section with all sorts of cr*p like this.

Dave and the other guys have lives of their own. When they come to judge the contest they have to flip through every thread in the section to see if it contains a contest entry. But no ..... what do they find courtesy of you wise guys. Half of the contest section is filled with stupid discussions like this, questions on how to post screen shots, blank postings with no shots at all (like 3 or 4 times with some twerps - if you can't post surely it makes sense to find out how first doesn't it?) and goodness knows what else. So they open a thread, find out it contains garbage and no pic and then have close it again and go onto the next wasting time and effort and increasing their frustration.

There are prefectly good sections in the forum for general discussion where you can indulge yourself and sound off to your hearts content. But this ain't one of em.

To be fair roller, it is now upto the mods to move this. Theres little anyone else can do. You cant really expect people to stop replying to an unlocked topic.
I am on the constructive criticism bandwagon.
