What can I say?  This is very sad, I'm sure that most in the UK and Northern Europe can remember the Herald of Free Enterprise in Zeebruge.

My sympathies go out to those who have perishd and to their families.

I agree Woody.  If the Herald had been in open water the same thing would have happened.  No trace etc.  We'll find out what happened in the end.

A bit insensitive of that Yahoo page to have an advert for "Ocean Finance" with a little boat bobbing about in it!!!  ::)

I saw a news flash about this on the BBC news earlier, then on Hungarian TV they showed some footage of what appears to be a British destroyer in the area?

The Egyptians have four frigates in the area. The Royal Navy has a Destroyer heading in that direction but is a good 24 hours away and probably won't be needed.

Also interesting to note that the first distress signal, an emergency beacon, was picked up at RAF Kinloss in Scotland.

Well I'd hope we could pick it up as we have some of the best listening equipment in the world.
The funny thing is if you are a ham radio operator you can often pick-up something better from the opposite side of the world than just the other side of town..... something to do with atmospherics........... not really my field!

I wouldn't be surprised if a Nimrod was over the scene before much else either...

4 of Egypt's numerous frigates are of US origin and look vaguely similar to the RN type 23s...
