This is why I don't apprectiate the FDA.  Well, one of the reasons.  While this report is for Britain I'd imagine it's much the same in America.  You would think any food agency would make sure the point of eating food (nutrional value) wasn't being taken away.

I'm still in Chile for one more day, so I'm gonna enjoy the last traces of the great food here!  However Chile is bent on copying the US in every way possible.  They even have a street in downtown Santiago named Nueva York with a huge display in the middle of a forked road....  Times Square!

Good lord! Sometimes, you don't need an idiot to prove you wrong about how infinite human stupidity goes.

I just scanned trought the article when I picked up the line that the study was conducted by a chiropractor who also sells mineral-supplements... hmmm... I smell some conflict of interest... I'd like to see more reliable studies by independant researchers.

On the other hand, I would'nt be surprised if things went downhill with out food! The mix all sorts of stuff in it. Nowadays they sell "special" chickens that are only fed with vegetal products. This means the others get all sorts of by-products, greases, aditives, ect... There's yet another scandal about dioxines in fats sold to live-stock nutrition manufactorers in Belgium... Why don't they use natural ingredients, like in the old days?

Check out 'Bad Science' at the Guardian Science website. Ben Goldacre does the column and is asking for any 'bad science' out in the world.

This just seems to be another beat up for the alternative medicine group.

As far as I know all you need to do is eat a balanced diet as your regular daily intake and you should not need ANY supplements.

You may find that you are,in fact ,damaging your health by taking things you don't need.

On top of that,60 years ago everyone was in the middle of a world war. I believe they may have had a basic nutritional understanding as compared to today and testing procedures now current but I find it hard to believe that a scientist, let alone a chiropractor, would accept such evidence that MAY have been(lot of files to troll)available as proof.

I'm glad to see there are other critical minds out there! ;)

The only supplement I take is vitamine-C, cause it's a watersoluble vitamine, which means that if you take to much, it leaves the body trough natural liquid removal... Unlike other vitames that are fat-soluble and build up in the body...

It was a little longer than 60 years but I know what you mean. Food was still rationed in Britain until 1954 & people had to manage on basic foods. These were worked out to give a balanced diet with as much nourishment as possible. The rump steak used as an example in the article would have been a luxury to most families in 1940. The important thing to me as a child being brought up during this period was the free orange juice & milk. My Mum always used to feed us a spoonful of cod liver oil when we went out the door to school in the morning. Ugh........! I'm sure that's the reason most children of my generation were healthy with far less allergies than people seem to suffer from nowadays.
