Behave when reading this!

WARNING! - ANYONE TURNING THIS INTO A RELIGION DISCUSSION GETS SGT OMAG ON HIS ASS!!!!

Just a quick question!

There's been some reports in the news about a new theory about evolution, called "intelligent design", that reacts against the evolution theory by Darwin. Seems an American court has ruled against it beeing taught at schools.

I'd like to know more about that plan, out of curiosity and to understand what the fuss is about.

Can anyone give me objective info on this or point me to a neutral website? I don't just want the pro- or contra- visions on it!

Cheers,

Omag

Sounds interesting but I've never heard of it.

However interesting or logical it might be it's a theory which like any other theory is not fact until it's proven which is highly unlikely. ;)

I just found this on Google. http://www.actionbioscience.org/evolution/nhmag.html
It should give an idea of the pros & cons on this subject which I would hope are discussed in an intelligent, polite & respectful manner. It would be very difficult to find anyone with a totally unbiased view on a subject like this so you have to read everything you can find on it & come to your own conclusions. Whatever conclusion you might come to nobody can prove you wrong.

PS. You can't prove them wrong either. ;)

I know nothing about intelligent design, but we learned about evolution in Bio 2, and I must say, it makes perfect sense.

It's not necissarily new, we learned about it in Philosophy and it's been around for a bit.  Lucky you British are that the conflict hasn't reached you!

Intelligent design, as far as I understand is Genesis, Chapter 1 disguised as a scientific theory.

I haven't read the article, but I doubt your claim woody. More likely it is a general idea that not only covers a Christian perspective, but that for any religeon/idea. I know there are beliefs of some designer among aethiests. It isn't weird and I am very surprised you haven't heard of it before.

What makes me laugh is that evolution is only a theory, (never proven in any one area of science in 150 years of research) but bring in another theory no matter how absurd/sensible and it is shot down. ;D
If you take the simple fact that one cell is more complicated than all the books in the world contain, and each of those billions of bits of information is supposed to take millions of years to change it doesn't even mathmatically add up, let alone extremely technical animals and just look at the diversity there is too!
There are billions of people in the world and billions have lived before - yet there has been not a single sign of the slightest change in humans that they are a seperate species.

I could go on, you all know my real views, and I'm not getting into trouble with either Omag or mods. ;)

Omag specifically requested that this did not turn ito a discussion. All he wanted was a few facts on the "Intelligent Design" theory. Darwin's theory of Evolution caused just as much controversy as this one when he first announced it. I seem to recall that he thought very carefully before announcing it as he realised that it would upset many people. Although it's the currently accepted theory it's still disputed by many even today. Just remember that they are both theories & nobody is ever likely to be able to prove them right or wrong.

Doug, I didn't realise I was stepping out of line, but don't worry I wasn't going to comment again on the subject.
I just couldn't figure how folk haven't heard of it. It was on the BBC news several times here alone.

As for facts, well I'm sure I could dig something up........

There are loads of links there too. Shoudl be something to help interested parties.

EDIT: PLEASE don't comment in material from the link. ;)

The title of the topic makes it perfectly clear. ::)

If you'd read the whole thread you will see that I said in my first reply that I'd never heard of this theory. I rarely watch TV & avoid the news like the plague so that explains why. ;)

PS. I now know a lot more about it than I did this morning from reading the intelligent & informed discussions on it from the link I posted in my second reply.

Intelligent design, as far as I understand is Genesis, Chapter 1 disguised as a scientific theory.

Thats not correct.  Intellenegent Design is simply a somewhat alternate view on evolution basically.

Pure natural evolution occurs under what is called "natural selection."  Meaning, that events occur which select for certain traits-therefore certain traits have a better chance to remaining and others have a better chance of disappearing.  So, over time, an organism slowly evolves through completely random mutation.  If the mutation is beneficial, than that organism may be slightly more fit (fit is a bad word-but I can't think of a better one) and so that new trait will have a slightly better chance to be passed on.  This is basically how traditional evolution works.

Intellegent Design takes this and removes the random element.  Basically those who promote intellegent design don't disagree with evolution, but they feel that someone or something (God) guided the evolutionary process.

My understanding is that the courts have outlawed the teaching of intellengent design in public schools in the state of Pennsylvania.

But, in my experience in Catholic schools, I was never taught intellegent design.  I was taught normal evolution in my Biology vlass.   ;D
