Goodbye Draken!

Postby Ijineda » Mon Nov 28, 2005 9:53 am

On Friday 25th the remaining 28 Saab Draken of the Austrian Air Force were sortet out...after 20 years of service! Austria was the last country to use those oldies, now were waiting for the eurofighters to come in 2007!

In the meantime, Austrias Air Force consists of some F-5... :P

Austria is a member of the european union, so for me its kinda logical to buy eurofighters...besides, the EF is probably the better choice. Saab aircraft have been used since the 50

Believe me the gripen, isn't that much less capable than the Typhoon, and its much cheaper. Being a previous customer they could have likely gotten a price break on it too. Or even the Rafale, dont get me wrong you should all know i am Typhoons biggest fan, and am happy to see it sold, but I cant see how Austria really need what is compaired to the two mentioned above, an expensive fighter.

Don't get me wrong at this but I was told be a Swede in the summer that the Gripen is now sold by Bae and Saab now does nothing more than make them.

You certainly can't say that it's not a unique design.

the biggest threat you have to worry about is the swiss like all of Europe. If those guys decide to kick it off no amount of Typhoons will matter ;) ;D

To be fair, it may have been a little bit of "one-up-manship" over their eastern european (former eastern bloc) neighbours who are some of the Gripen's main purchasers...

I'm telling you they are hiding something. Theres no way a country can be so anti-car and various other eco friendly things and really mean it.
