Must be true. It's in the newspaper.

Nothing would surprise me about Europe these days but this is a new one on me. I must admit it's a little strange. It appears that this woman is applying for a job as a waitress & nothing else so it seems a tad over the top. She might well object to working in a brothel, never mind becoming one of the girls.

It's kinda hard to not show a very strong reaction on this one so I'll just keep it at this...

That is sick. What a dirty load of laws some countries produce.  :-/
Probably an oversight on the part of Germany - (sure they never meant it) but indeed to actually force people into that is so awful.

That's the problem with so many of these EU laws. They might mean well but they don't think it through properly. The law in various countries has evolved gradually over many centuries. The problem with these people is that they always think that they know best & rush these things through without stopping to consider the effect these new regulations will have on ordinary people's lives. The same can be said for the Health & Safety regulations & that new insurance legislation that grounded warbirds llike Sally B last season. All well meant I'm sure but impossible to put into practice. It's obvious that most of these people don't live in the real world.

After giving this some thought it brings up a very interesting moral dilemma. This is the first I've heard of it so it could have been inaccurately reported or there might not actually be any truth in it.

Nor is it necessarily so restricted. The basic local outlook is that, if you don't qualify for and want the the job, neither you nor the employer is going to be happy; you're probably going to be right back at the unemployment office very soon. Not very good for the stats.
A particular midwestern state requires that you check with any potential employer, whether qualified for the job or not. Thus far, employment in a brothel is not a legal trade there but, should it ever be, they'd be in the same position as Germany if not compensating with exception clauses.

I'm all for the forced-into-employment idea, if people are not getting up off their arses, and aren't actually trying to get a job. But there surely should be restrictions on some jobs (like prostitution), especially if the people being made to do it, are actively applying for jobs themselves.

This is all very well in theory but, as H points out, someone forced into applying for a job they're not interested in is not likely to last long in the job. This is a complete waste of both their own & their employer's time for the sake of statistics. While I appreciate the difficulties many people experience in finding work, some people are simply not interested in working for a living. This is another very interesting subject in its own right but deserves its own topic.

I don't really see that. If prostitution is legal & seen as respectable you cannot deny the people running a brothel the chance to advertise for staff just like any other employer. There's a very good argument for legalising prostitution & this has been seriously suggested in the UK several times over the last few years. If this ever happens I just hope that our law makers learn from the mistakes in Germany & other places. Somehow I'm not confident that they will. In any case, we'll probably be forced to accept the misguided EU ruling on it so whatever our own legal people think about it is irrelevant.
