Three die playing catch with grenadeBANJA LUKA, Bosnia (Reuters) - A hand grenade being used instead of a ball in a game of catch exploded early on Saturday killing three youths in this Bosnian town, police and news agencies said.
Two youths aged 19 and 20, one of them from neighboring Croatia, were killed instantly while a 20-year-old woman died on her way to hospital, police said. Her sister was slightly injured but two other youths suffered serious injuries.
The blast occurred at 2:00 a.m. in the western town of Novi Grad at a place in the town center frequented by youngsters. Police said an inquiry was under way and declined further comment. It was not clear why the grenade exploded.
ONASA news agency quoted witnesses as saying the youths tossed the hand grenade to each other before it exploded in the hands of one of them.
Bosnia is awash with illegal weapons left over from the 1992-95 war and tragic incidents are frequent despite several successful campaigns by international peacekeepers and police to get people to hand over illegal weapons.
I know we all love to throw things around, but does it have to be explosives

Me thinks he was reffering to Pidgeon... (?)
It was not clear why the grenade exploded.
Because the pin was pulled...

I think that Jordon was referring to Pigeon's comment. We all seem to be getting a tad edgy after a few hours of fun. This is a serious subject but unfortunately not uncommon in many parts of the world that have been war zones. People are still regularly killed or horribly maimed by landmines planted many years ago in some of these places while trying to live their normal lives.

Yes, it was Pidgeon's comment I was referring to (I gotta learn to use the quote button).

Reminds me of a story I heard of a family who used an old artillary shell to put under their table leg. It exploded on day during supper

That's sad.

They probably never realised it was a bomb. But then they were 19 or 20. :-X

Being Bosnia, I'm pretty sure they were fully aware of what it was.
Perhaps they believed it to be a dud?

Very probable; I wouldn't be surprised. Either that or they wanted to live in the edge. I suppose they certaintly did.
Assclownage in it's finest form. Unfortunately, it sounds like something I'd do.

Kids are kids the world over. I'm sure they knew what it was but maybe didn't fully realise the danger. I read only recently about a young lad who took a live WWII vintage hand grenade to school for a history project. I think it belonged to his Dad or more likely his Grandad. When his teacher saw it they evacuated the school & called in the Bomb Disposal Squad who took it away & blew it up.

Reminds me of the Ukrainian guy that lived here in Hungary and tried to frag his elderly next door neighbour as she was feeding her chickens in the hen house and his dog retrieved the grenade and brought it into the kitchen where the guy was.... bye bye kitchen, bye bye doggie, bye bye Ukrainian wally

I think people without military training lack an understanding of just how dangerous these things can be! Alas it always costs lives and nearly always of innocents
