maybe it's something to do with decimal points, thats just a guess

OK, this is simple math:

60 KM/H in M/S

60 KM = 60000 M

1 Hour = 60 Min = 3600 Sec

=

60000 M / 3600 S = 16.6666666666666666667 M/S

I might be wrong, but I think you need to divide by the time unit.  So, it would be:

60 km/hr = 60 x 1000 = 60000 m/hr

I think thats right

But since the hr is in the demonitor of the unit, you need to divide by that factor.  So, divide 60000 / (60min x 60 seconds) = 60,000/3600 = 16.67 m/s

I think thats how you would do that.

Yeah...

X Km/h = X / 3.6 m/s
X m/s = X x 3.6 Km/h

Yeah, that's all correct. Where you are going wrong JrPilot is multiplying meters by minutes. A bit like multiplying rats by rabbits... ;)
If you have  x meters to an hour than that is exactly the same as x meters to 60 x 60 (3600 seconds makes up 1 hour).

Then as the others have already said it is simply 60,000m in 3600 seconds. That is 60,000/3600 to give 16.67 meters for every second traveled.

Check the answer by working backwards. 3600x16.67= 60,000. (Well actually it doesn't cause we rounded it up. :P).

Am I stupid?

I'm sure you don't really want me to answer that. ::) :P :D

I would use an online converter. Easy. http://www.onlineconversion.com/speed_all.htm
It's a very long time since I had to prove my calculations, thank goodness. ;D

Cheat.  As long as you can translate KIAS into MPH you're never  going to need that stuff.

I thought British used the metric system

A common misconception. We do & we don't. Most things are metric, even the petrol or gas as you know it. Unfortunately all the road signs are in miles. Work that one out. No wonder life is so complicated. ::) :D

Last time I checked all our model shops sold balsa in multiples of inches, which is just as well as every plan I've seen is in inches. Just don't tell Mr B or trading standards will be round making it all metric...
