Although I read Theis' post with caution ( I mean I would watch out for that email) I doubted the severity of it's ability so I'm not surprised it is a hoax.

Never mind Theis. ;)

I am cautious with all e-mails. Even ones from friends and relatives. My ISP server for my e-mail client has been infected numerous times. I've actually gotten e-mails from my ISP that my system locked up as being infected. My ISP never bothered to warn anyone about the fact that their servers had been infected. This really pissed me off. I can only imagine the amount of subscribers for their service that now have trashed computers.... >:(

But e-mails of the type Theis posted always make me check at Snopes.com. first before forwarding them.  ;)

;D

That sort of email gets sent around the internet collecting thousands and thousands of email addresses that certain people then sell to those nice folks who send you junk mail. :D :D :D

Therefore, if you ever get an email warning you about something "serious" that tells you to forward the email to as many people as you possibly can, just delete it, cause it's trash. :P

So basically the email is a hoax? this might sound stupid, but if it is a hoax is there a virus in it or is it just to wind you up?

If you check the link I posted you'd see a complete explanation of the e-mail hoax. There are also links on that hoax page to Symantec and McAfee that give their takes on the hoax.

There was absolutely nothing legitimate about the e-mail. It was authored as a hoax and a completely fake/non-existant virus was used to scare people into thinking it was legit. They have even put out a version claiming that their story was verified by Snopes.com and Snopes.com's comment was, "Still, it's flattering that some hoaxsters thought so highly of our site that they invoked its name when trying to pull people's legs."

If i see anything like that with an address I don't recognize, into the trash it goes, without being opened.
If it seems to be from a friend, before I fwd it to anybody, I'll call and ask about it.
Here is my rule:
Thou shalt not be so gullible as to assume that strangers on the Internet are acting out of the kindness of their hearts!
