Math is all lies...

Alright....

Sorry to drag this up (:P :-X) but, while sitting in calculus today, a friend of mine and I did something unthinkable, we started thinking about math.  So, here it goes...

Okay, this is to prove that .999999999999(repeating forever) is the same as 1.

He says:

(1/9) = 0.1111111111(repeating)
(8/9) = 0.8888888888(repeating)

so (1/9) + (8/9) = 0.1111(rep) + 0.8888(rep)
which means (9/9) = 0.9999999(rep)
and since (9/9)=1   ,    0.99999 must be 1 also.

I say (again, sorry about this, but I am really bored):

Say you have 3.9999999(rep)

according to him, this is 4.

so, if you have a rounding down function ((step-down function)( where you round any real number  down to the nearest intiger, i.e. 1.8763 becomes 1.000, 5.987869 becomes 5.0000, etc...)), again you have this thing and you plug in 3.999999(rep) and use this function on it you would get 3.00000 because it is not 4 or above, however if you did this according to his rules, 3.9999(rep) = 4 and you use this answer, you would round 3.9999(rep) down to get 4.0000. ???

so, according to him, 3 = 4

So all of math is lies and for a third time (not a fourth I don't think) I am very sorry and it seems I have misplaced my pretty white jacket with the special sleeves and shiny buckles.

(Oh boy)

 :-/ :-/ :-/ :-X :-X :P :P ;D :-/

I'm going to bed......Image

*Big, tall, strong men in white uniforms grap Mobuis and puts the I-Love-Me jacket on him*

*Katahu preps a syringe*

Don't you worry. Everything will be alright. Soon, none of this will have ever happened. 8)

Wait, Katahu, first let me add to the confusion. In sequential reduction of a series of numers to a single integer (i.e. 3+4=7, 8+6+7=2+1=3, etc.), a 9 added to any number equals that number (9+5=1+4=5, 9+9+7=2+5=7); in such a case, since 0 plus any number equals that number, 9 must equal 0 :o ???.  :-X 8)

Why do I even attempt to read a topic like this? Now I got a headache. LOL!!!!

But never worry sooner or later it will be found that numbers as we know it was a prank and 1+1 won't equal 2 but really 1, I mean we have been taught what numbers represent but what if the whole time it was wrong, some vital mistake that occured centuries ago??? Oh man! now Im thinking too much! I had better go lay down. lol

When you start thinking of it like that, it can't help but get confusing! I was shown something like this that 'proved' 1 = 2 a couple of days ago, strange!  ::)

Hint for the topic starter: read a decent article about IEEE floating point mathematics

Well, I can help you prove that 0.(9) = 1, but you're on your own with the 3=4 thing.

1/3 = 0.(3)
3 * 1/3 = 1
3 * 0.(3) = 0.(9)
Therefore 0.(9) = 1

Here is something you can ponder though.

a = b
a^2 = a*b
a^2-b^2 = a*b-b^2
(a+b)(a-b) = b(a-b)
(a+b) = b
a+a = a
2a = a
2 = 1
