This is the most overhyped storm of the century.  It passed through last night.  Winds were just over 50 mph.  There was almost no rain.  The only damage done was some to trees, and even that was minimal.  We lost power at about 3am, just got it back  a little while ago.  NO problems on my end, just happy to have my computer back on.

and yet once again new orleans is being flooded and some other towns were hit hard, so while you personally wernt badly effected others were. over-hyped? possibly however its slow movement as it got closer to land gave it time to weaken a little.

It was Cat. 5 and it came ever so soon after Katrina. I think it wasn't over-hyped. The experts aren't to know it would come to just a gale over your house. AS Craig said though New Orleans is up to 10ft in water again.

I don't mean my house.  I mean the entire city of houston was being projected to be hit bad, and it was barely affected

We're certainly not complaining that you're safe, Jakemaster, all of us are certainly glad of that. However, we also have have concern for those who have not fared so well.

i am concerned for them as well.  I am just pointing out that because of katrina, this storm was made into the storm of the century, which it wasn't.  School was closed on thursday and friday, and won't reopen till wednsday.

The thing is, this storm had too much news coverage.  I think that if you had seen what was going on from the local standpoint, you would understand what I am talking about more.  Starting thursday, there was almost round the clock coberage on local news, even though the stom wasn't supposed to hit until saturday morning.  Galveston had mandatory evacuations, and it should have as this island has been devasted in the past, in 1900 a hurricane hit, destroying the city, killing 8,000 people.  Then, houston had voluntary evacuations in some areas, it is a HUGE city.  THis is where it became absurd.  tens of thousands (probably more) of people tried to leave.  All major highways became parking lots, people were running out of gas, needed water, etc.  I heard on the news one evening that a man who was trying to leave, was talking to ne reporters on his way back.  He left at 4:30 am, and was in his car for 14 hours or something.  It was made into something that it wasnt.  There really was no need to leave.  The worst tragedy was that a bus full of old people from a nursery home in bellaire, right next to my synagogue, left to evacuate, even though they really didn't need to.  Outside of dallas, the bus caugh fire, and 20 people died, which definately should not have happened.

So don't take me wrong, this storm was pretty bad, caused lots of damage where it went, but it wasn't as bad as people were saying it would be.

 I think that after Katrina, you are going to see major freaking-out over every hurricane that comes our way for a while.

After going through several hurricanes in my life. I can say that tornado's scare the crap out of me. At least with a hurricane (even in times before radar) you have several days if not a week (depending on radio communications at the time) to find suitable shelter. Even back several hundred years you got hours worth of warnings about an approaching storm if you could read the weather signs.

With a tornado you have what, from 0- to maybe 5 minutes to take cover...yikes

That and tornado winds are allot more concentrated into a smaller area and do considerably more damage no matter if it's an F-1 or an F-5. Granted, hurricanes can be several hundreds of miles across and the hurricane force winds can extend up wards of 100 miles from the eye and they last allot longer. But pound for pound, tornado's are far worst in my humble opinion.

I had a chance to live in tornado alley once and I respectfully declined the offer to move.
