......Union Jacks abound. ;)

Enjoy your dinner and perhaps a quick question.

Do you refer to dinner like we do as the main meal and enjoyed midday (was sure "midday" was hyphenated but guess not ;D) or is it an early evening meal, say about 18:00 hours?

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

Hi Doug...!

Union "Flags"..... (Jack*)...-;)...!

As for din-dins....
It looks as though it's just you and I left in the whole world who agree that meals should always be taken in the following order...>>>

Breakfast: Early Morning.
Lunch: (optional). Mid Morning, Tea and biscuits.
Dinner: Mid Day.
Tea: Late Afternoon.
Supper: Before bed-time.

All you "Modern" lot out there, take note and observe... ;)... ;D...!

LOL...!

Paul.

* .....Union Flag should be flown only by ships of the Royal Navy as a jack, (a small flag at the bowsprit).

Thanks Paul :)

Darn I learned two things from this post ;)LOL

I try to learn at least one new thing a day, well Paul it is not even 11:00 AM here and now I have learned two things.

The old girl will either be so proud of me when she gets home from church or I will catch hell for not getting some canning and preserves done ;DLMAO

I know she prays for me when she goes to bed each night, that is why she only gets half a nights sleep I told her ;DLOL, when she leaves Sunday morning for church she always says she will say a prayer for me.  I guess that is why she is always late getting home. :)

Well I had better get off this thing and do something constructive.

Thanks for the info Paul.

Cheers...Happy Landings...Doug

Think you got that slightly wrong Paul. The Union Flag is the national flag of the United Kingdom. It's often called the Union Jack. This is technically incorrect as a jack is small flag flown from a jackstaff.

Now I am confused. ::)

Is it the Union Flag that flys over military bases and at consulates?

Does the Union Flag fly at the rear of a warship with the Union Jack being a smaller size flying from the bow of the same warship?

Does the Union Flag fly to the right behind the reviewing officer of a parade?

Do all other national flags along with unit colors fly to the left of the Union Flag on parade and I am talking about left of the reviewing officer if the Union Flag is behind him and to the right.

During a public parade when the Union Flag is carried by a color party does it fly to the right of the other flags.

I am talking strictly British Military Parades as I do believe most countries would probably be the same.

I always thought the Union Flag was the same as the Union Jack....guess I was wrong all these years.

Interesting topic :)

Not to be confused with the U.S. [Confederate] Rebel Flag (as seen on Dukes of Hazzard Charger's rooftop) that was used as a union jack on vessels after 1862  :P.

Basically yes Doug. It's explained in Fozzer's link. This is the Union Flag.

Image

The official national flag of the United Kingdom since 1801 & symbol of the British Empire. It can vary in size & is what you would see flown from flagpoles all over the world. The Union Flag is a combination of the red cross on a white background of St George (England), the white cross on a blue background of St Andrew (Scotland) & the red diagonal cross of St Patrick (Ireland). The Welsh dragon does not appear on the Union Flag. This is because when the first Union Flag was created in 1606, the Principality of Wales by that time was already united with England and was no longer a separate principality.
The fact the Union Flag is also commonly known as the Union Jack causes the confusion. This is only a technicality & might be based on a fallacy. There are several theories for the origin of the term jack when applied to flags & pennants.

Does the Union Flag fly at the rear of a warship with the Union Jack being a smaller size flying from the bow of the same warship?

All Royal Navy ships fly the White Ensign which incorporates the Union Flag.

Image

Woody will correct me on this but I think it's normally flown from the stern. The White Ensign is also used as a battle ensign & hoisted to the top of the mast before going into action. If you see a Royal Navy ship with the battle ensign hoisted you know it means business. I don't know much about formal miltary etiquette as applied to flags or when a jack would be flown from the jackstaff at the bow of a ship.
I take it this refers to the Flag & not the Jack which adds to the confusion. The Union Flag (informally known as Union Jack) is not worn at sea except by Royalty or by certain Royal Navy officers. http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/White-Ensign

PS. This might interest you. Quote:
Canadian ensigns

In 1868, the British Admiralty made the Canadian Blue Ensign the proper flag for ships of the Canadian government, and in 1892, the Admiralty approved the use of the Canadian Red Ensign by Canadian merchant ships. A blue ensign with the province's coat of arms in the fly was used as the Flag of Quebec until 1950.

From about 1870, Canada unofficially used a Red Ensign with the arms of its provinces on one shield as its national flag (the Canadian Red Ensign). In 1924, an order-in-council made the flag official (for certain purposes) and replaced the provincial arms with the royal arms of Canada. The red ensign was replaced by the current red and white maple-leaf flag in 1965. In that same year, the provinces of Ontario and Manitoba adopted red ensigns defaced by their provincial arms as their provincial flags.

What really annoys me is when Aunty Beeb, (the BBC), constantly refer to the flag as the Union Jack, when they really mean the Union Flag... ;)...!

Paul...a rare bit of flag-waving... ;)... ;D...!

...anyway....
What's all this got to do with my Sunday Dinner...?

LOL... ;D...!

Not worth worrying about Paul. Don't get your bowels in an uproar over nothing. If you worry about everything Auntie Beeb gets wrong nowadays you'll give yourself a hernia or something. It might be complete fallacy anyway. "The term Union Jack possibly dates from Queen Anne's time (reigned 1702-14), but its origin is uncertain. It may come from the 'jack-et' of the English or Scottish soldiers; or from the name of James I who originated the first union in 1603, in either its Latin or French form Jacobus or Jacques; or, as 'jack' once meant small, the name may be derived from a royal proclamation issued by Charles II that the Union Flag should be flown only by ships of the Royal Navy as a jack, (a small flag at the bowsprit)."

Not a lot, unless you hoisted the Union Flag before eating it. :o I expect you've scoffed the lot by now so it's ancient history. :D
