Google satalite images..

Postby f-16 » Mon Sep 12, 2005 9:22 am

How current are the google Maps satalite images? I know they all say 2005. But how current in 2005? Are the images "real time" from the sat?

It depends on the area. You may have noticed that some parts appear darker than other parts, thats because they were taken during different seasons, possibly of different years. I know for one that the images of where I live are at least 3 years old or more.

Keep in mind that being copyrighted in 2005 doesn't necessarily mean it was done or taken in 2005. I could take a picture from Vietnam that was taken in the 60's by me, a relative or even a friend and post it on the web and copyright it 2005.

;D

I zoomed down to my house in birmingham (england) and my next door neighbours caravan is there, and she sold it about 3 years ago!
So where i live, no the images are not recent.

The reason I asked is because I looked at KMIA and they showed the new runway barely under construction. Isn't that runway just about finished yet?

Pro Player Stadium, just north of KMIA, shows a Iowa logo on the field.  That would place it in December 2002/January 2003 (the last time Iowa played in the Orange Bowl game).

google earth, as well as msft terraserver's imagery is from 2002. exactly:
east coast (east of KS): April 10, 2002.
West coast (West of KS): April 12, 2002.

BAM!

That is one of the reasons the US Military is trying to stop Google Earth from displaying images of Bases. Right now you can get bases in iraq up and even use the built in tape measure to compute distances for morter attacks.
