Would like to obtain some information about an Atlas that Readers Digest is promoting for Eighty Dollars Canadian.

They say this Atlas uses satellite imaging, looks almost 3D, is up to date with all the statistics (ex. population, cities, elevations, history etc.) of all the countries.

They say this is the finest Atlas made.  I would like to know if anyone else has it before I purchase it.

I would also like to know if the information that is in this Atlas would be on the Internet and free.  I am sure it must be.

The only problem with printed maps is that they go out of date so quickly. The same applies to data of any kind. It might not be quite what you're after but the CIA (yes you heard me correctly) has an online World Factbook covering most countries in the World. The information is regularly updated & the best part is that it costs nothing. This is the entry for the UK. http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/uk.html

PS. Combine that with the Google Map & I reckon that covers it. http://maps.google.com/

My favorite atlas is my lovely Readers Digest Great World Atlas 1st edition. Published in 1962.

It might be a work of art & a joy to behold but I expect all that information is completely out of date by now. Many of the countries no longer exist & the theories on the solar system have changed several times since the 1960s.

Keep it long enough & it'll come back into fashion, just like my wedding suit. LOL

Apart from the occasional earthquake and volcanic eruption, the lovely 3D, coloured relief map of the land and ocean is very interesting, and hasn't vastly changed from the time of the purchase of my wedding suit.... ... ...!
Good info on geography and geology as well... ...!
(Population details a bit out-of-date due to recent sexual over-activity).

I'm with Doug on using the CIA factbook (online), I find it rather handy when doing stuff for certain lessons on the Commonwealth as when I've got the annual delivery from the Embassy it is out of date

I simply use online Atlas's for reference...I don't have any classes that require an Atlas, so I don't even have one. I have used Google Earth and the online thing too which is maps.google.com

The thing I like about Atlas's is the fact that you can study them in bed, on the loo, out in the garden, etc.... ...!

...something you cant do with a computer and an neck-aching, upright monitor screen...  ;)...!

Trucker...my Readers Digest Atlas is also an encyclopaedia, ie, lots of other things apart from maps...

Do you not have a printer Paul?

Print out the information you want. Read it anywhere & any time you like. Saves all that bother leafing through the numerous pages of your antique out-of-date atlas.

PS. Keep the atlas. It will look impressive on the bookshelf where it belongs.

I suppose everyone here has had a look at GoogleEarth.com ?

Runs a bit slow on my old gear but must be a great asset for anyone doing sceneries...............

Gives satellite photo views down to the degree where  you can seperate cars from RUV's, they are not live pictures but "stored" ones.     Seems to cover the USA much better than other areas but very interesting to try and find your own backyard.
