Do you or have you packed your own snack, lunch when you go flying?

We do it all the time, even if we are only going for several hours and I am referring to our own aircraft the Cessna 172.

I will usually take:
1-ham and cheese sandwhich
2- two salted green onions
3-a small bottle of water
4-apple or some other fresh fruit

The old girl will take:
1-sandwhich other than ham and cheese
2-pickles
3-a sweet like a piece of pie or cake
4-cheese
5-small bottle of water

We share a large thermos of tea, celery and carrot sticks.

We have been doing this for years and we find it saves on pit stops and is quite enjoyable.  
A sort of flying picnic.
The aeroplane also has an emergency ration kit as most of the area we fly over is sparse.  I change the kit once a year.

One of the things we do is I pack her snack/lunch and do not tell her what she is getting and she does the same for me.  She does know I love my green onions though.

Just one of the little things that seems to make life go smoother.

No i never have taken food with me when i fly GA, thats not that bad of an idea though.
But around here all the good destinations arent more than an hour away, unless you go to socal, then its more like 2-3 hrs but not too long.
I sould look at packing some MRE's on commercial flights though, theyd be better than the airline food(if they serve food at all

Oh yeah, on my epic journey to New Orleans a few years back I had all kinds of goodies with me (I camped out on my overnight stop, so I was prepared for that too), but nothing messy. I had my backpack strapped to the right seat, with everything handy. Glad I thought to do that... even had a thermos with coffee, but I didn't try to drink out of the little cup in flight- filled a travel mug and used that.
On other not-so-long flights, energy bars or whatever, and definiteley something to drink. Those water bottles with the "sport nipples" are perfect for that.

A little altitude will definitely encourage "outgassing", too... there have been a couple of times i was very glad I was alone....  But I've found that if the vents are open, the airflow is pretty good in a 172. And if things get really nasty, just crack a door open a hair and things will clear up pronto.

I only fly out of the local airfield for jumps (normally me leaping out but sometimes blagging a ride up front for fun), so nope. Mind you there are a couple of excellent nosh-shops near the field along with a fantastic pub

For a typical fly ride on my bike I pop into my trusty ruck-sack a bottle of fizzy lemonade, some cheese and tomato sandwiches, some chocolate biscuits, a banana, (one of Jordan's favourites), a map and a compass, (so I don't get lost), My AA break-down card (in case my bike goes belly-up),....
...oh...
...and some petrol in my tank... ...!

Well I guess one of the reasons I brought this topic up was the large number of vending machines present that have replaced the small diner at small grass aerodromes.

For example within an hours flight in a Cessna 172 from me all the local general aviation aerodromes have closed their small diners.

All one can get is what is offered from vending machines.

Even the local flying clubs only open their kitchens when a function is going on and I find many functions now are months apart.

During the 1950s and 1960s the small diners at local aerodromes were always open.  Saturdays and Sundays they did very well with non-pilot types showing up to watch in wonder at the local bug smashers.  This was also a good income for the flying clubs and schools.

I remember riding my first motorcycle to the local airfields in Toronto, Ontario while going to university. They were Maple, Kingcity, Markam and Baldwin and sitting for hours talking in front of the flying club with arm chair pilots and bug smasher drivers.  

That real hamburger I bought was savoured, cooked on a real grill with a milk shake you could drink and did not have to chew.  All the ingredients were real and fresh.

Along came the fast food joints and the vending machines and ruined everything.

Many a young bug smasher today doesn't know what he or she is missing.

AND

It would be so easy to start it all up again if folks were not in such a hurry to get home and turn on the dam TV or computer.

The good old days, of course we can bring them back, all we got to do is do it.

Umm, I never go flying long enough or far enough to have to pack a lunch..

I have been known to take special ladies to restaurants located on airport property though....no matter how bad the food is, the view makes up for it all...

I've visited a lot of airfields of all sizes but not too many by air. I'm not sure what it's like now but a lot of our club members used to fly from Shoreham to Sandown on the Isle of Wight for afternoon tea. I never went but it sounded a delightful way of spending a nice summer's day. Shoreham is a fairly busy airport with two nice restaurants. Some smaller airfields like Popham have a cafe that does a nice cooked breakfast & a barbecue for special events. If there's nothing on the airfield itself there's usually a nice old country pub nearby so I rarely take anything with me except a few bottles of fruit juice & an apple.

I got this from the Shoreham webcam earlier. The clock is in GMT so it's 5.21 pm local time. This is a typical scene outside the main restaurant in front of the terminal building on an ordinary weekday afternoon.



Nothing much going on out on the field but there's usually plenty of visitors & airport employees on a break. It has one of the best views anywhere in the South of England & I always enjoyed working there. It's changed quite a bit since I was a lad but I've looked on this place as my second home for over 50 years.

The stand has been run into at a picnic and lunch went flying...
