Oh by the way. The Aberdeenshire accent is supposed to be one of the worst in the country... (!!) so you may like to listen to that. (Aberdeen is on that bit that juts out of Noth Scotland, not the top tip the one below).

Interesting. This chap is from Worthing. Not a traditional Sussex accent but it gives some idea of how lot of people speak around here. http://www.bbc.co.uk/voices/recordings/individual/southerncounties-worthing-hart-ian.shtml

I actually kinda understand the Aberdeenshire.  I can barely understand most of 'em.  Welsh is completely beyond me. :-X I wonder if it's hard for Britons to understand Americans?

??? Americans can't understand Americans, Texan :P 8). Nevertheless, I understood most of the Anglican-based idiom. The only Welsh I know basically comes from names in a translation of the Mabinogian; that's to say, I barely know a little more than none.

I never had a problem with any American accent. I have trouble understanding some British ones* myself & I was born & bred here. I've said before that true broad Geordie (Newcastle) & North Yorkshire dialects, as spoken by the older residents, are more like foreign languages. I find Glaswegian the same but I suppose that really is a foreign language. ;)

*PS. Unfortunately these regional accents & dialects seem to be dying out, to be replaced by a mixture of 'American' & 'Australian'. No doubt influenced from watching too many Hollywood films & TV imports from a young age. I know which I prefer. ::)

PPS. Just think what a boring world it would be without a little variation. The old song "Little Boxes" springs to mind.
Little Boxes
by Malvina Reynolds

Little boxes on the hillside, Little boxes made of tickytacky
Little boxes on the hillside, little boxes all the same
There's a green one and a pink one and a blue one and a yellow one
And they're all made out of ticky tacky and they all look just the same.

And the people in the houses all went to the university
Where they were put in boxes and they came out all the same,
And there's doctors and there's lawyers, and business executives
And they're all made out of ticky tacky and they all look just the same.

And they all play on the golf course and drink their martinis dry,
And they all have pretty children and the children go to school
And the children go to summer camp and then to the university
Where they are put in boxes and they come out all the same.

And the boys go into business and marry and raise a family
In boxes made of ticky tacky and they all look just the same.

I'm sorry, Scorp... :'(...!

...it's just that every time I hear a "Southern", (Texas), accent, I get the overwhelming desire to cringe, curl up into in a ball and stick my fingers in my ears until the pain is finally over... :-[...!
...especially when it's a "Female" speaking/whining/etc...
...(Think Dolly Parton, Jodie Foster (Silence of the Lambs), etc....)....
...not forgetting the "Marines"...
LOL...!

Give me "Up-Market, New-Yorkers" any time... ;)...!
LOL...!

Interestingly...one of our Members mentioned in a PM that he HATED his Alabama accent/drawl... ;)...!

I can cope with most of the British accents...
...but there are some which make me want to cringe, curl up....etc...etc... ;)....LOL...!

Nothing quite as nice to listen to as a women with a southern accent Mr Fozzer, just as long as the person talking is actually intelligent enough to put together proper words.

Like Craig, I find the Southern accent attractive. Can't think why you should dislike it so much. Still, it's a good job we don't all like the same things. That would make life terribly boring. ;)

Not sure there's a typical New York accent. One person I find painful to listen to is Lloyd Loyd Grossman. http://www.ukgameshows.com/index.php/Through_the_Keyhole

Hands up, all those, this side of the Pond, who REALLY love George Bush, with his Texan/Florida accent desperately trying to convince the rest of the World that he really is a very nice chap... ;)... ;D...!
LOL....!

...and as for the New York accent....

Not sure there's a typical New York accent....

I find that relaxing when listening to a quiet discussion, (or story-telling), in a language/accent, (Northern States), similar to mine...(BBC English)... ;)...!

Cheers all...!
