Greed strikes again...

Postby Wing Nut » Sat Aug 27, 2005 8:09 am

Well, this really makes me mad.   >:(  First theatres got stupid, and now restaurants are too.  Personally, I will refuse to pay any bill that ends up with a "service charge."  A tip is supposed to show gratitude for a job well done.  In fact, TIP means "To Insure Promptness!" It is NOT a requirement with the meal and there have been several times in my life that I have refused to pay a tip because service was so bad.  If restaurants are so worried about the disparity between wage groups, then let them eat the cost of a raise (no pun intended).  How long before it becomes a tip PLUS the service charge?

Tipping point

Well thats just a load of old b*ll*cks isn't it - if he wanted to make sure that all the staff got tipped evenly then he should put all of the evenings/days tips in a pot & divide the amount equally between all of the staff, hardly rocket science.

he also claims that the average tip for his restaurant is 22% whilst his 'service charge' is only 20% so really it's his customers who will pay less - yeah that'll work, assuming that 100% of his customers actually leave tips, somehow I don't think they do.

I wouldn't mind betting the restaurant as a whole will make more money in 'service charges' than they used to with tips.

What a terribly sad thing to do, I wouldn't eat there either.

Either tip or service charge, simple as that.

Here in the UK you can legally refuse to pay a service charge if you feel the service is unacceptable.
My personal favourite is the restaurants who add a space for tips on credit/debit card slips. I give tips in cash IF I think the service is acceptable.

Too many have come to think that a tip is a required part of a bill.  It is not.  It is something you give to reward good service and that is all.  You tip Valets, Pizza Guys, your barber, etc...  But you don't do iot because you HAVE to you do it because they did something special to please you!  >:(

I know what youre talking about!

I once had a sandwich at the hotel where I stayed in Canada. So when I was finished, and had to pay the guy, I gave him 15 % of the bill, and the guy looks at me, calls me an assXhole, and leaves.

This might have something to do with tourists. It's more common now but tipping in restaurants was not traditional in the UK only a few years ago. British tourists were always regarded as bad tippers for this reason. Not that I ate out often in those days but the only person I would tip was my barber for some unknown reason. ::) Fortunately I was warned that tipping is almost expected for all sorts of things in the US before my first visit. I noticed in holiday resorts in places like Florida they would automatically add a service charge to the bill once they heard me speak. After being caught out once or twice I now read the bill carefully before leaving a tip.

Should've taken the tip back off him & kicked him up the ar$e - & then reported him to the management for calling you an assXhole.

Cheers,

If your on about tipping then its not a legal requirement anywhere to the best of my knowledge. Thats the whole point, you pay someone whos a good waiter/ress. Now if your on about something automatically added to the bill i have not actually seen this yet. Generally my only requirement for a tip is a smile on ordering and food delivery, i think its unfair to tip the waiter/ress based on speed as more often than not they can only go as fast as the kitchen is cooking.

I will never give a tip to a waiter/waitress or anybody else. You know why? Because it's their job. They get paid by their employer. And if they think they don't make enough money, find another job.

Crash ;)

lol, now this world is a sad place to live....

I have a sister who makes most of her money through her tips at the place that she works at, still I believe they have to earn it. A tip in my mind is kind of like a raise, and me as a guest has the right to either give or not give one to them. In my book you have to earn it.

I'm not saying that I will stiff the waiter out of a tip if the service is ok. If it is real bad I will tend to leave less.

On the other hand if the service is real GOOD there will be a really nice tip waiting for my waiter.. :) (20's always make them smile..)

Otherwise if the service is standard, not too bad not extra-ordinary they will get the normal 15 percent from me.

I don't think I like the idea of a service charge on my food, which makes me glad that we don't eat out very often! Those home-cooked meals don't come with a service charge, and the only tip that is required is doing the dishes once in awhile.. ;)
