Eating bubble gum's bad for your health

Postby Nemesis_5.4 » Thu Sep 01, 2005 7:17 pm

I've just read in the 'time' (an Australian mag) that a dentist from New Jersey affirms that 'The relationship between gum disease and systemic disease, specifically heart disease, has been widely reported.' and that 'The overall ability of the body to heal and stay healthy is certainly compromised by a chronic infection like gum disease.' I'm myself a bit surprised, I knew gums weren't very good for your teeth but I'd never thought eating these little white stuffs could be lethal. Now you know what are the risks...  :D

ahh, there is risks for everything in life, if you believe it all you wont do anything with life...look at flying, and how pilots are well prone to cancer yet it doesn't stop us.

But interesting find, since I do chew gum a lot

I don't think it's talking about the candy.
I think it's refering to the fleshy pink stuff you're teeth grow out of.

As the son of a dentist, I can safely say that chewing the right kinda gumm is good for your teeth. The sugar free gums are the right kind! Chewing it does stimulate the saliva-production, needed to neutralize the acid-attacks that take place after eating food ( chemically, sugars are converted to acids in the mouth). The saliva will rince the teeth, even at places that toothbrushes can't reach.

These acid-attacks destroy the glaze-layer on the teeth, making them accesible for the rather nasty bacteria that break down the structure of the teeth...

So by all means... CHEW!  ;D

I like chewing gum, and it's never caused me any harm.

But, an old teacher of mine, years ago once said that chewing gum can cause stomach ulcers, if you chew so much of it because of your saliva going into your stomach.

I don't know if this was a load of crap to stop us from chewing in class, or actually true. Whatever, it still didn't make me stop chewing.  ;D

It's actually good for your brain in some respects lol, the chewing makes you think more - some teachers in my school now let us chew as long as it doesn't end up everywhere, e.g on the usual spot, under the table. ::)
