When Simon Osborn called the police after his 10 year-old daughter Amy dropped her cuddly toy tiger out of the car window as they travelled along the M11, he may have been forgiven for thinking that little would be done.
But he was wrong. Following the call, police set up a road block to rescue Tyrone the tiger from the middle of the motorway and reunite it with its distressed owner.
PC Al Cuthbertson patrolled the stretch of road between Stansted and Harlow and spotted the tiger on the central reservation after it went missing on Friday afternoon.
Officers took the necessary measures to ensure that the rescue mission was as smooth as possible. A temporary rolling road block was set up to enable an officer to get out of a vehicle safely and rescue the toy. Tyrone was then returned to Amy in Ramsgate, Kent.
An Essex police spokesman explained why such care was taken to respond to the unusual mercy dash. "Having children of his own and knowing the importance of soft toys to their owners, PC Cutherbertson kept his eyes peeled as he patrolled the M11.
"A short time later Tyrone was spotted on the motorway and successfully captured and placed securely in the back of Golf Tango 23. A phone call to dad in Ramsgate has resulted in one delighted daughter."
"Any parent will know how attached a child can be to a cuddly toy and a few moments of inconvenience [to other motorists] would probably be quite acceptable to offset the young lady's distress."
The spokesman stressed that the force would prefer it if people contacted them, rather than opting to stop on a motorway in a bid to retrieve lost items themselves.

I'm sure the people at PETSA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Stuffed Animals) would approve....lol.

Great story and I wouldn't doubt it a bit if such an organization really exists.....lmao.

Good for the Essex Police force. They obviously realise the importance of public relations. Public opinion of the police is at an all-time low right now & this will do a lot of good.

I have no quarrel with the traffic police. I've been let off with a warning several times over the years when they could easily have given me a ticket. It's those darned Gatsos & the whole concept behind them that I have problems with. Human beings can use their judgement but it's impossible to reason with a machine.

You've gotta thank us dutchies for the gatsometer... NOT

PR is something the dutch traffic police still has to learn... especially when from time to time nasty things leak to the media (like the fact that the police has to fine a pre-determined number of drivers in a certain time limit. if they don't reach this limit, they will get their budget cut, and when they go over the limit, the new quota to keep their financing will be higher)

Nice story, but I think that maybe the Police should be asking why Mr Osborn was allowing his daughter to be hanging a stuffed toy out of a car window on a motorway.

Imagine the panic of the driver behind when seeing a large blurry object falling onto the carriageway whilst (probably) travelling at 70mph - an older or even a less experienced driver may have swerved to avoid the object & possibly caused a collision due to over-reacting to the incident.

An accident that could quite easily have fatal consequences.

Now I know you'll all say 'shut up TSC - everything was fine' - but it could happen, & thats all i'm saying.

That's true of course & I imagine that Mr Osborn & his daughter are well aware of it by now. I doubt they will do it again. The difference is that they will now think highly of the police & hopefully be more sensible in future. There's two ways of applying the law & I prefer this one.

As for the news clip - well I'm confused. I know a retired professor in Endiburgh and someone fired a stone from a catapult in the early hours of the morning. It smashed through his double glazed living room window and then through the glass door and then loanded in his hallway. The police wern't interested - after all no-one had been hurt.

The account given here doesn't indicate whether or not Mr. Osborn had anyone else to cope with the child, howbeit, if a normal 10 yr old, this one should have been more responsible. Driving and trying to keep a young one under safe control can be nearly impossible; they don't comprehend the dangers. All youngsters here are supposed to be strapped into a seat but even a two-year-old can often figure out how to get out of them.
