80+ G's?

Postby Foxtrot Sport » Mon Aug 08, 2005 10:08 pm

So, I was watching a television show.  (After playing FS, I swear)  I and it was about Car Crashes and if a tissue box on your rear seat shelf could kill you.  Any-hoo, during the show, they said that in a car crash, a person can pull up to 80 G's!  I thought NO WAY!  I heard the astronauts pull what, 8?  So they did the crash, and found thier dummy to pull 120 or something G's.  Is thier data wrong, because I find that hard to believe.

No, its true.  Its just that you're only pulling those Gs for a fraction of a second, so your body can endure it, while an astronaut pulls the 8 Gs for much much longer.

Its not the speed that gets you....its the sudden stop!

It's actually kind of both.  During a crash, the car comes to a sudden stop before the occupants do.  So, the car stops but everything inside doesn't.  Thats where you pull those G's, its actually probably -80G's but that really doesn't make any difference.

I had less than 10-G on me when I bought my Charger but only a $100 or so when it crashed (fell asleep at the wheel; pulled the fender away from the tire and continued on my way).
Aah, wrong G's, huh :-[?

When a car crashes there are three collisions.  The car hits the object, you hit the car and your internal organs hit you.  It can be very messy.

You forgot #4: when the tissue box comes flying off the rear deck and smashes into the back of your head. And God help you if you've got one of those bobble-heads back there...!!

Well it ended up that at 75 mph, the tissue box didn't really do anything.  Might hurt a little, but no damage.  The Axe and bowling ball however, both went right through.
