Thinking of changing last name, need opinoins

Postby legoalex2000 » Sun Jul 24, 2005 5:14 pm

I've been thinking of changing my last name from Ramos (said Ra Mos) to Raymos or Raimos(said Ray mos). I want as many opinions as i can.

I do this so my last name can be pronounced the way I want, and for a few other reasons (wont go into).

please vote. thanks you!

:)Ramos or Raymos or Raimos...

I've always found the changing of ones name
to be somewhat of a slap in the face to your parents.
And changing a last name, that's like a kick to the groin of all your ancestors.

Don't change your name; if people can't pronouce it, that's their problem.

I was going to change my name to Chest Rockwell, but it seemed vain so I didn't.  It seems unneccessary unless your last name is Dahmer or Simpson, or something offensive like that.  I'm sure anyone who was related to Jeffery Dahmer or Jessica and her retarded sister has since become "Smiths" or something.
Life is just a simulation.

There was this one individual [heard a story about it] who changed his name to "Hey You". Seriously. And he was in the military at the time.

Speaking of names....

Calling out the names of the patients [so they can pick up their meds] makes about 1/3 of my job. Imagine, having to call out names that are either HARD AS HELL to pronounce or can be deemed offensive [even though that was never the intension]. I've seen a few names that can be offensive, so when I call them out, I MISpronounce it purpose.

Example:

Indicated name - Sukmy Dik
Intensional mispronounciation - Sookmee Dike

No offense.

::)

As for you, remember this proverb:

"I cried because I had no shoes, until I saw a man who had no feet".

Moral:

Be happy with what you have. :)

You're asking for trouble. The ignorant will just call you "Rye-mos" or "Ray-moss"...take it from a Morrissey; not everybody (in the USA) can deal with anything more "exotic" than "Smith" or "Jones". Some of the mispronunciations I've heard of my  family name have left me utterly astounded...
Stick with the spelling and pronunciation your folks use... and roll that "R" with pride if you find yourself correcting people!!
BTW, I'm confused... what is the official pronunciation in your family- "Rah-mos", "Ra-mos"("a" pronounced as in "hat"), or "Ray-mos"? I've heard all three pronunciations of the same spelling... are you looking to change the spelling, the pronunciation, or...??

My motto: Call me whatever you like; just don't call me late for supper... ;D

Don't change it, just stick with it. People who are stupid to learn to pronounce it properly are peasants who are beneath you ;)
My name is Osborne, Hungarians pronounce is Osh-Bore-Nay! Yes sometimes I get the hump, but at the end of the day it is my name and I'm attatched to it...

Seriously though, I don't think you should change it.

My mom's last name is Germain. and she's been thinking about changing my name to Germain. she would actually find no problem in my changing my name.

it's Ra, like as in the Sun god Ra. and mos is in your going to say 'most', but you drop the t.

thanks again people.

In a predominantly european society, I knew a guy named Kwan.     He changed his name to Khan - never quite worked that one out, especially as he had Chinese features.

I think you should do what you feel comfortable with.

I'm divorced & my ex remarried but I was always proud that my daughter kept my name. It was never suggested she change it but that would have upset me terribly. Not that it matters now. She got married & changed it anyway. ::) ;)

Just out of curiosity - what happened to all the 'Hitlers' after WW2, I mean, Adolf couldn't have been the only one, even if it wasn't a common name.

Sorry, but that's been bugging me all day.

Anybody know of any??

Cheers,

TSC.
