Does anyone here build models?

Postby Jakemaster » Fri Jul 29, 2005 4:52 pm

I was just wondering if anyone built models.  I just recently got hooked on to building plastic airplane models.  I started out with a 1/144 scale B-29, and I fell in love.  I really liked the size, so for my birthday I asked for more models of the same scale.  I only got one, but it was a huge b-52.  Then I got a 314 clipper, concorde, and p-38.  All of them are on a 1/144 scale, so the p-38 is tiny (My mom said it was cute)

So what models do you have?

I don't anymore, but my preferred scale used to be 1:72.  I remember countless hours spent rigging the WW1 wings with black sewing thread...

I've bought a number of kits lately, and have even threatened them with getting them built...

One use, of course, is to get the details for modelling in FS.  When you don't have access to photos or the real thing, some of the models can be quite detailed (especially the larger scales).  Then again, some models may not be especially accurate

Haven't built a plastic kit since I was about 14. That was a very long time ago. :o My bedroom was full of them at one time, mostly 1/72 scale.

I have a partly built 1/4 scale Stampe in my bedroom. Been there gathering dust for several years & I doubt it will be finished now. Not by me anyway. http://www.sussex-model-centre.co.uk/Stampe-2201.htm

I have built lots of models in the past but haven't lately, and I have about five in my closet that have yet to be opened (A Gee Bee Racer in 1:32, A Gloster Gladiator in 1:48, two Bf-109E in 1:87 and one La-7 in 1:48.)

The ones I've built...
1:18: P-47D, FW-190
1:32: Laird Turner 'Meteor' Air Racer
1:48:  Spitfire Mk.V, P-47C, P-47D-30, P-51D, F6F Hellcat, F4U Corsair, Bf-109G, Me-262
and 1:72:  P-47D-25, P-47D-5, F3F-3

Most of them are crap because I built them a long time ago when I was a lot younger.  I had a lot of free time when I was little.  :P

well, mine are crap.  I only really build them because I enjoy building them.  Yeah, I occasionally like to admire looking at them.  I don't even paint them, and I have only put decals on two of them.

Hmm maybe this is something I want to get in to. Is it hard? Do you need anything special for them?

I built models when I was younger but I haven't done any in several years.  Most of the one's I did were 1:48 scale, I built mostly WWII stuff (B-17s, B-24, B-25, Bf109, P-51, F4F Wildcat, P-47, and others).

I painted them and everything and was quite good at it.

Does anyone here build models?

From time to time when I feel like it :)

This one's been on my desk for a while now. I built the Tamiya version a few years back, but a friend decided to pick it up off the shelf and take a closer look only to drop it a few seconds later... So this is a replacement for that one (Just don't ask me when it's going to be finished) :P

I have gone in and out of model building waves my whole life, right now I am out of it, but over last winter I built several, mostly armor and race cars, I have around 150 unopened kits stashed away, it is one of my favorite hobbies and eventually I will float back into it just like I always do.
Still no linked images allowed around here Paz! Naughty...

Long ago I was a 1:32 scale junkie. Come to think of it, I was probably just hooked on the glue... ;D Probably built more cars than airplanes, but I was definitely into airplanes. I was never very good with the small-scale stuff...too frustrating. I did, however, complete a pretty small Cutty Sark model at one point, even made the rigging out of black thread and glue... almost smashed it a few times, but eventually she got finished.
I also vividly remember the 1:48 Revell B17 that I built at age 13 or so... it was the only thing on my Xmas list, and I got it (and a few other things). That was probably the last plastic kit I built (painted everything properly, too- inside and out); I have a few small models still kicking around that I've never started. some rainy day when i'm laid up with a broken leg, maybe.
Hard to believe all those models, so lovingly crafted then hung from the ceiling with fishing line, all wound up in the trash eventually... :'(

I do a bit (alas not much lately due to my daugher, in fact I've got a MkVIII that hasn't had any work done on it for about a year, guess how old my daughter is ::))
I tend to like 1:48 Airfix and Tamiya, all my collection are of course Spitfires. I've got a 1:32 MkI to build, but the biggest beast in my collection is a 1:18 MkI which Kevin got for me (cheers mate) ;) My daughter is fascinated by it and loves to touch it, daddys girl 8)

The majority of my planes were 1:48th scale. Of my WWII model Japanese planes, the kits were actually made in Japan (Tamiya, etc.) except the Monogram's Zero. Most of the WW2 German and Allied planes were Monogram, Revell or Hobbycraft, in that order of manufacturer.
My only WW1 plane, a Nieuport, was 1:72 scale and my one and only 1:32 scale  -- my 1st WW2 plane -- was a chromed P51D; consequent P51's were 1:48 scale like most. At first, paint & decals were applied according to instructions but I later painted and applied insignias per my "camping club" camps (most of the campsites were on my own property -- was my parents' -- and each had its own flag and we had our own little wars). This has carried on with my own repaints of the stock CFS1 planes.
Also, I installed small electric motors in a couple of the models but was only industrious enough to utilize them to spin the props.

I made several over the years up until about 5 years ago. The include (in 1/72) about seven Mk XIV Spits, two Mk Vs, one Mk II, one Mk XVI, acouple of Hurricanes, Hellcat, Catalina, DH Comet, Gladiator, Yak 15, Beaufighter, two Lancs, Blenheim, and even more when I was younger.

Pride and joy though had to be the 1/32 Westland Lysander... ;D
