 Man, if they ever perfect the technique it will be great!
Imagine how much time it will save driving to and from work, which for me takes up about an hour and half of my day, not to mention traveling across the country.
 If I could instantly beam to Arizona to visit my mom, I would go there all the time, but dealing with airports and all the crap that goes along with flying these days, not to mention the 3.5 boring hours crammed into an airliner seat really doesn't encourage me to want to go anywhere anymore.

Season 8 [eight] of Stargate SG-1 had an episode that utilized the teleportation technology quite often.

In the episode, the commander of the SGC [General O'niell - 2 L's] and the Asgard Thor used the beaming technology to visit the President, and many other things. I never managed to finish seeing the episode because it was on TV [no Season-8 DVD yet] and I had other errands to do.

But then again, such technology is a double-edged sword. Especially for a volatle species like us. In one episide, a rogue, underground human element [known as the Trust] used the beaming technology to steal the Stargate from the SGC and used it to send chemical missles to the go'uald-occupied homeworlds [killing many would-be-rebel Jaffas in the process as well as Tok'ra operatives].

As you can see, I have seen too much Stargate episodes.

considering star gate only did the teleportation idea to give them more freedom over the ring device, and star trek was doing it long before star gate was a movie i have a feeling they will be going to the trek for ideas.

Dunno if anyone else read Alan Moore's Watchmen, but in that story, where teleportation was possible, living things either died of shock upon finding themselves in new surroundings, or teleported into solid objects and exploded.

But who knows?

The question is:
once you've been de-materialized from the original biological form -- even though all you were is recorded in a different format, are you still alive ?
once the re-materialization takes place, is it really you or just an exact "copy" of what you were?

Reminds me of a sci-fi story I read a while back.  Aliens come to earth and bring with them teleportation.  Except that it's not exactly like Star Trek.  The way it works is that it scans you and makes an *exact* copy at the destination.  But to keep the universe in proper balance, the aliens said, the original has to be disposed of, if you catch my drift.
