How Can I Make Money?

Postby littleport2003 » Fri Jun 24, 2005 4:12 pm

Hi Guys

As most of you probably know I am starting training for my NPPL Microlight licence. So far in a month I have saved up enough for a half hour lesson (i'm going to wait till I can get a full hour). But because i'm not 16 yet I can't get a proper job, so any ideos how I can make some money for a few months till i'm 16?

Thanks MAtt

I dunno what the child labor laws are in the UK, but try and apply for a job at a fast food joint. Again, I don't know the laws but they usually start off at minimum wage or higher. Give that a go.

..that, or you could always sell drugs.. ::) :-X

No don't do that. :P

I can't suggest a specific job but these are the employment regulations.
The law on the employment of young people states you may work for a maximum of:

2 hours on school days
2 hours on Sundays
5 hours (if aged under 15) or 8 hours (if 15 or over) on Saturdays
8 hours on weekdays during school holidays, with an overall weekly limit of 25 hours (if under 15) or 35 hours (if 15 and over)

If I'm reading it correctly you can work for a maximum of 35 hours a week during the school holidays. Of course, that's providing you can find a job. If you want this badly enough you should be able to find something.

best place to look is your local supermarket. The pay isnt great but they usually have jobs going, and depending on the company will look the other way as to the hours you work.

If  you find a company willing to break THIS law, might I suggest NOT working for them?  Willingness to break this law could also be indicative of other laws protecting you that you may wish were respected should something happen to you. ;)

Before I had a real job I used to mow lawns and do any kind of yardwork or misc. job that would score me some cash. Have a car wash or scam people on the internet, you could sell sexual favors to creepy old men in dark alleys at night...uh...I mean...no, not that last one.
Still no linked images allowed around here Paz! Naughty...

the company i worked for were less than law abiding. I wasn't impressed working 50+ hour weeks for 2.50 an hour at 16 but what are you gonna do when nothing else is going.

Not sure what kind of worker's comp laws there are (if any) in the UK, but lets go with this scenario for just a moment.

Say you find one of these companies that works you illegally.  You're working one night, and a box falls on your leg, completely incapacitating you and causing permanent disability.

Now, knowing that they were working you illegally, do you really think the company will be willing to pay for your medical costs, as would be required under workman's compensation laws?

hype, i actually broke my foot while working for them, i had a stock cage trip me up and run over it. The best they did was give me 5 days off paid. i could have sured because it was improper training that caused the accident, infact lack of correct handling to be more precise. Simple fact was, no one would hire me and i desperatly needed the money.

Exactly my point...It's hard for me to say what you COULD have gotten, because I know nothing about UK Labor Law, but in the US they'd be required to pay for your medical expenses, you could collect disability, etc...

there are no medical expenses. Free healthcare here. however i could have had upto 4 or 5 weeks off. however i was able to walk on it within 3 days and felt upto returning and didnt want to risk seeing how far they would wait. again being young i generally didnt know then what i do now. its partly that which lets me see past the crap most managers feed to employees.

I really don't think they'd have workers comp for teenagers, Hype. Proabably after you turned 18, yes, but you wouldn't be working in the warehouse under 18.

At littleport's age, he'd probably be bagging or returning carts to the store. And if he was hit or something, he could sue the driver, if he was in a crosswalk. ::)

most do here, even as i was coming to the end of my time there they had the younger kids working the warehouse. its not that difficult. generally though it would be required two people under 18 had to lift the heavier things like TV's, washing machines and so on. Although again that was a newer thing when i returned after a year away. when i started out i was left to do these things alone. Good for building up strength if not a little dangerous.
