Audiophiles?

Postby Wing Nut » Fri Jun 17, 2005 11:02 pm

Any serious audiophiles out there?  I have some high end  speaker questions and can't seem to find a solution.

Kevin

P.S.  This could have either gone in Hardware or Music, so I split the difference...  ;D

Give me a shot!
I used to have the system of all systems when it came to audio back in the day before MP3 and all this digital stuff ;)
Now I just use my computer for my high end sound system and to be honest although the sound is great it doesn't beat the sound of a true record (vinyl) on a awesome stereo rig with the 100 band Eq and 400W amp , 20" woofers, 10"mid and 5"tweets, and a 30"sub! Now that is a block party! 8)
Its all in the weight of the magnet ;)

I recently bought a set of speakers at a yard sale that seem to be reasonably high end, but are somewhat old. Each side is actually two components consisting of two smaller speakers with what I assume are two plastic coned tweeters, and one app. 8" paper coned speaker in a case that is about 1' x 2', and a square cone coming out of the side. The other half of the set are two app. 3' cubes with 1 woofer about 15" in diameter in each. The back of the smaller speakers have 2 knobs labeled Attenuation, and the usual hook-ups. The only specs I have are where it says System Impedance 8 ohms, and Frequency Response 125 Hz - 20 Hz. The woofers have just wire hook-ups for them and no specs.

The only info I have on them is the plaque on the smaller speaker that says "Cerwin" (not Cerwin-Vega) and below that is some kind of signature that looks like E. J. Czer... On the back is the part number 320 MT and the serial number.

That's all I have, except the previous owners father said something about them being used in a Playboy shoot, and a model being naked on them. :-)

So, can anyone help me here or at least point me in the right direction? I tried punching the model number into a search engine, but had no luck. If I had to guess, I would say they were from the late 70's or early 80's.

And if it's really in the magnets, these thing weigh a TON!

Thanks in advance,

Kevin

So what's your questions - since you already bought them?

8 ohms should work with any amplifier.  Plug 'em in and crank em up.

I'm not an expert but AFAIK attenuation is sort of like a hardware equalizer.  Turn your amplifier's equalizer to flat and fiddle with the knobs.

It's probably a little late to advise but I would avoid paper cones.  If they're 20-30 years old they're not going to last long.  Most modern speakers use plastic.

I'm more curious about their place in the history of speakers.  I'd kind of like to find out more about them, whether they are worth restoring, etc...  I used to have a set of Infinity's that were about 6 1/2 feet tall, that I totally rebuilt.  They kicked a$$.

You have just exhausted my knowledge of this subject.  My Google search didn't turn up anything, either.  Good luck.

Yeah, they had something like 20 tweeters and 12 mid-ranges each, with 2 woofers...

I'm a big speaker addict.  :)

Well the Attenuation is basically the oposite of amplification, use it to adjust the how well you hear the signal coming from the speaker, such as your speakers are placed along one wall and you listening area is across from them, if the sound you hear coming out of the speakers is distorted or unintelligeble then adust the attenuation until you can clearly hear the sound.
Hard to explain but once you hook them up adjust it and you will notice the differance ;)

As for the speakers Ivan hit the nail on them being 70's era.
If my mind serves me what you describe is actually a set of studio monitors. The  320 MT is the model of the smaller unit, so this means may not be part of the larger speakers you should be able to find something located on the woofers maybe on the back of the magnet itself to get some more info from.

Eiether way the 320's are rare and hard to find, if you have a complete studio set in working order I would say you scored big!

LOL!
If they are the model I think they are you should have some awesome bass response without the "muddy" sound as well as some great highend without distortion!
I have always thought what is good for the studio will rock the home!
I envy you ;)
