Sorry to go on a rant guys, but this is something that really gets on my nerves when bidding on ebay.

Why do some people put in a stupidly high bid for no reason at all?? I was looking at bidding on these forks to replace the suspension stanchions on my MTB, yesterday the current highest bid was

It could be a preset maximum bid thing, non? You know if someone puts a higher bid then it goes up above than by a certain amount....

Look at it this way..

ilovebadgers put in a maximum bid of (say GBP30.99), and in turn martinb put HIS maximum bid at GBP42.00. which made HIS bid at GBP31.99 (only GBP1.00 over the previous maximum bid.)

In turn, Tommy went in little by little until he hit GBP43.00.

Adam3038 may very well have a GBP51.00 maximum bid in, but his current valid bid is GBP44.00)



I've managed to get some nice deals by popping in a bid within the last 45 seconds of a bid....

i was gonna say. I didn't think it would register a specific bid untill it had been beaten.

You could well be correct there Felix - I have never used the 'maximum bid' facility so I don't know how it works - although there are no bids placed in between the first two by 'ilovebadgers' so I see no reason for the bid to be increased.

It just seemed a shame to me that the winner has had to shell out an extra 20 notes for no really good reason.

I also realise that people who can't be around at the very end of a bid have to use the max bid facility, so that could well mess up the whole bidding process if someone is prepared to pay over the odds for a particular item.

First off most of those people have no feedback, which means that they probally won't pay for the item.  But yeh I am with you, I hate when they jack the price up UNLESS I am selling the item, then I love it.  But why can't people just wait for the last minute and then bid..... :-/

The last time I tryed to bid in the last 10 seconds of an auction, the network here decided to not load the confirm bid page

Could it be the seller with two accoutns (notice one guy has no transactions) - deliberately bidding to put up the price. Unlikely I know, but I am sure that has happened.

"ilovebadgers" had a higher maximum bid than first registered, so say mikeb tried in invrements until he hit GBP17.00 which is .01 more than ilovebadgers" max bid of GBP16.99

Recently I won a bid for something my wife dearly wanted.  I knew that the last minutes were critical so  I waited until the last moment...  When I started, the bidding was at US147,   and at the last possible moment, I went in with my max bid of US302, and won the bid at 176.   the top bidder at the moment had had a max bid of 175....  Evil, yes, but I've lost bids the same way....

It's called a proxy bid.  It will bid incrementally on your behalf until it reaches the maximum bid or until the auction is over.

"Buy it now" is really the way to go most of the time if you can catch a good selling price

Yep, 'Buy It Now' is a winner in my eyes - I got FS2002 & CFS3 that way because I couldn't be bothered with losing the bid & going "Oh well - i'll look again in a week. Ho-hum"

Incidentally - this is my 500th post so I guess i'm the new tea-boy, I'm taking orders in the cafe right now - although personally i'm off to the fridge for a beer.

i dont mind when its people sniping as they are willing to put the time into it and there is always a chance. I hate those who use the programs. those that bid on the final second which makes it impossible.
