This poor stoaway had a gruesome ending from Flight 203. I feel ever so sorry for such people. They must be so desperate to take such risks.

I expect quite alot of them understand nothing about air travel and the physics involved, and don't realise that a) they will freeze, and b) they won't have much of an oxygen supply after 10 minutes or so. I expect they get in thinking very reasonably they'll just be able to jump out the other end...

I posted this news in the Real Aviation forum before finding this thread... the lady makes a good point. We should thank our lucky stars our lives and education are good enough that we don't feel compelled to try something so foolish.

It makes me wonder what in his/her lifestyle were so bad that he/she was forced to attempt such a thing.

Thankfully, I think its safe to say the poor sod would have died from exposure long before the plane came into land.

Neither is a nice way to go!

Yeah, this was a headline the other day here on Long Island. Floral Park is about 20 miles from me.
When I lived in Long Beach, Long Island, I was directly under the flight path to/from JFK. One summer day an entire human body fell out of the landing gear a few blocks from where I lived. Actually, in the 5 years I lived there, this happened twice!

Where'd I put my sympathy?  I can't seem to find it.

Forrest Gump said it best when he produced the following gem:  "Stupid is as stupid does."

[quote]Do the stowaways actually think that there is room inside the landing gear compartments? Don’t they realize that as they are hanging onto whatever metal is up in there, once the hydraulics start to raise the very heavy landing gear, that his fragile bones are no match for it. Even if he survived the gear collapsing inside the small compartment, don’t they know that they will most likely freeze to death and or suffocate?

Sadly these people are very often victims of crooks at the departure airport. They or their families unwittingly pay them for the privilege of being sent to almost certain death. There will always be people scum prepared to profit from the misery of others.

I find it rather disturbing that nobody noticed them.  If this happens often,  wouldn't it would be just as easy for a terrorist to walk right up and plant a bomb in the wheel well?

The African airports as well as the security there is not by any means that great. I saw a documentary once about something and there was a 747 coming in s some guy strolled across the runway. He looks at the huge aircraft as it's reverse thrusts are deployed so he steps it up to a slight "jog" to get out of the way. Kind of like when you cross the street and you need to move a bit faster when the approaching car seams to be going a bit fast.
